I just bought a blr 81 270wsm stainless and have a question I hope someone can answer. When I bought the gun I had a scope mounted. When they mounted the scope they took off the rear sight. The rifle smith said he would have to put back in the rear sight screw back into screw hole because browning drilled that for a millimeter screw. I took it to two other riflesmiths who told me the ame thing. So now I have a screw sticking up about an eighth inch out of the barrel. It doesnt hurt its performance but it sure doesnt look good. Does anyone know if browning makes the correct screw to mount in flush?

Welcome to the forum. I'd suggest getting a spare screw, and filing one of them so that it fills the hole but is flush with the barrel. You'd have to saw a slot in the end so you can screw it in and out, should be a straightforward proposition for any gunsmith.

Check Brownell's for parts.

I have an Anschutz that I remived the front sight from and wanted to plug the hole. The threads were metric. I went to a hardware store and bought soem screws to fit. They were plenty long enough. I just cut a slot on the end with a dremmel tool for a screwdriver, like was already described to you. I Just kept working it off the bottom a little at a time until it fit like I wanted it to. I used some Oxpho-Blue to touch up the head of the screw. I just can't see yours being metric though.

If one of the plug screws removed from the receiver wont fit, any competent workman should be able to determine the screw size. If your gunsmith doesn't have a micrometer and thread pitch guages, then he isn't much of a workman.

I you want factory original, Browning sells the scope base filler screws. In stainless I believe it is part #B3475A06 that you want. The complete part list for the Brownings (http://media.browning.com/pdf/parts/2005_browning_parts_pricelist.pdf) is avaliable on line in PDF format. Prices included. They appear to want $1.25 for a set of four of these screws.

For pre-1992 guns they want you to call Midwest Guns, (636) 931-7868 for parts and service.

If that sight screw is not the same size as the scope filler screws, you can call Browning and ask its actual size? Unfortunately, that information is not on the part list. Their parts and service number is (800) 322-4626. Parts are extension 836.

Why do you have to put a screw back in? I left it out when I mounted a scope on mine (blued model).

My rear sight is still on mine, but my scope is also a 2-7 with a 33 mm bell. I take it any bigger the sight has to come off?

Took it to the gunsmith today and he ground down the screw and notched it. Quick 10 minute fix.

Why do you have to put a screw back in? . . .

It's isn't a "have to", but it keeps the female thread clean in case you want to put the old sight back on without having to first clean out the hole. Worst case would be discovering dirt or lint had got in the hole and held moisture up against the threads and initiated rust. It is also cosmetic. I had a rifle with un-covered holes that I would find small insect cocoons in if I didn't have it out for an oiling all season.

I called Browning and they dont make a plug screw that fits the rear sight hole. Its a millimeter thread.
