In the next couple of weeks I'm going to get a bolt action .22. And I'm going to get a scope for it too! ;) Now here are some questions; I want to put the scope on myself but , do I need a boresighter, and what kind should I get? I would like to get one in case I need to change out scopes on my other rifles. I don't need a fancy scmany one, just something that will do the job. I sure could use some help with this one

A boresighter is pretty expensive for doing one rifle. You can easily remove the bolt from most bolt-action rifles, so use the Mark I eyeball to boresight it. Set up a target at about 25 yards, remove the bolt and line up on the target by looking through the barrel. Then look through the scope without moving the rifle and see where it's looking. Adjust the scope so it's on target too. The catch here is this technique is backwards to sighting in by shooting, so if the scope is point high, turn the adjusting knob UP. Once you're close to centered, finish the adjustment by shooting.

I have a magnetic one with Leupolds name on it. Seems to work well enough.

That said, if you buy decent scopes you probably won't change them much. I'd just boresiight them as Mr. Monteith suggests and use lots of cheap 22 ammo to get familiar with the new gun and get the sights adjusted.

Shoot it a bunch and have fun.

Try to get a scope for 22cal they are set to be clear at
50 yards not 100 like the others and/or get one with an
"AO" you will not be sorry.
I had to learn the hard way, now I try to save other
people from that problem I don't say what kind of scope
just what to look for hope it helps you.

idocdave posted some good advice. There is no good reason to put a centerfire scope on a 22LR. If you are going to do precision target shooting (versis plinking/informal targets) then you might want a 22 scope with Adjustable Objective. Don't fall for the AO centerfire option. Ya, it works but most anything optical works best from the middle of it's range UP to infinity. Cranking a centerfire scope down to 22LR ranges means you are using it at the edge of it's designed capacity so don't expect to see much of the quality you paid for. On the otherhand, AO scopes designed for 22LR are sweet, just not needed for hunting/plinking. Don't buy one of those cheep small diameter 22 scopes but you can get a good scope for less than $50.00. The American Rifleman gave good marks to the NEW Simmons 22 Mag scopes and I love mine. I don't understand however why they confused the issue by using the term "mag" because they are intended for 22LR.

I have a couple of scoped .22's. The one on the top is a Marlin Model 25 with a Bushnell Banner Lite Site 3-9x40mm. That scope is really intended for centerfires, but it works well enough for me. I'm just careful about always mounting the rife the same way, and paralax hasn't been a problem. The second one down is a Ruger 10/22 TNZ with a Leupold VX-I 2-7x32mm shotgun scope. The shotgun scopes have similar paralax settings as rimfire scopes so they work very well.

With the cost of .22 ammo as cheap as it is, I wouldn't worry about using a bore sighter. Just start at 25 yards, then move out further.

Put the scope on and set it to the middle of adj. Load up some bullets, stand 15'-20' and aim at about a 24" target (adjust til your close) then work your way back. Don't worry about any parralax til you get to the distance you want to shoot at. Should get zeroed in 3-10 shots. Save your money
