Im going to mount my new Nikon on my RUger MK77, 7mm. Before I put this thing on like I know how, are there any tips and tricks that you can share. Maybe there are some things I've never thought of... Some folks have said to have it professionally installed, but why?

Is there something I might want to keep in mind??

THANKS!!!

I'll post pics when I'm done.

Yes - if you're using the supplied Ruger scope rings, be sure to break the edges of the rings prior to clamping down on the scope body. Ruger rings usually have a sharp machining edge to them that will indent the scope body when tightened. You can use a dowel rod covered with emery cloth, or just use the emery cloth to rub the edges.

A scope alignment kit is handy for lapping the rings (this will eliminate the sharp ring edges) to conform to each other. Follow kit directions for this.

Don't tighten the ring screws down any more than barely snug to adjust the scope for eye relief and reticle alignment. Just enough to put a tiny amount of pressure on the scope, but free enough to allow it to be moved. Once all the adjustments are made, carefully tighten the screws alternately such as you would for a vehicle tire wheel. DON'T tighten 'til the screws squeak! You should be able to tell when you've tightened all the slack out of the screws.
