I do my research first. Then I usually order from Natchez Shooters' Supply. Their prices are usually lower and they have excellent customer service.
If you do a Google search for whatever optics you're wanting, you'll be overwhelmed with choices.

I just got a new scope and purchased it from SWFA. It took a while to get the scope becasue of back order but their prices and selection are good. Here is a link.

Actually, I would stay away from SWFA. Heard too many bad things about them. I'd stick with http://www.theopticzone.com/ http://www.bearbasin.com/catalog.htm and for binoculars/spotters Doug at http://www.cameralandny.com/

Don't forget Midway. They are the only ones I know that actually tell you on the web site if the scope is available or not.

Nachez has great prices. Midway is top shelf for all shooting supplies.
I have to give a plug for Bass Pro. I needed a basic pair of binos and scope. Cabellas and Nachez were offering the standard 3x9 Burris/8x32 bino deal for $199. It's mid-level stuff, not premium by any means, but you really can't beat that price for some very usable optics.
So I go to Bass-pro and their similar store offer is $39 higher/$19 higher on the inet. I told them about Cabelas. They checked it on Cabela's website, and matched it on the spot.
I compared the new Burris at dawn with my VX-3. The difference was very very slight. It was there, but not much at all. Based on all the game killed and paper punched with my previous two Burris', I expect no problems.
I'm going for the $169 deal on Nikon UCC 4x Monarchs that's out there next. That is the scope I really wanted over the Burris. Fixed scopes are more appealing to me allthe time. But since I needed the binos (my son lost my other bowhunting pair) I decided to get the Burris too. It's my birthday - what the heck!
I would have to think real hard before I bought a scope from somebody I never heard of.
I just sent a $300 scope back to Midway. Nothing wrong with the scope, I just didnt' think the purchase through (1/8 moa dots are tiny  ) No muss, no fuss.
Cabelas, Bass Pro, or Midway will not do you wrong.

All depends on what type of scope you want.
I would never buy a scope sight unseen, unless I knew that it was the exact scope that I wanted and also knew that the company selling it to me would stand behind it the first 90 days of ownership.
Sending scopes back to the factory is a pain in the butt and should be their problem and not yours.
One place that I know of that would sell you a scope at a decent price - would tell you over the phone if it was on stock or not.
Would also advise you if it was the right choice or not would be Grice Gun Shop - Clearfield PA.
Their knowledgeable staff would help you anyway they could to make sure that your satisfaction would be their number 1 goal...
