Hi

I am soon to purchase a Marlin cowboy, 44 mag. I am told that the new models have been bored to .432 dia. My friend is experiencing lack of accuracy and tumbling at 100 with standard .429 cast heads. He has a new 44 and has slugged/measured it at .432 dia!!! Can you buy moulds and bullet sizers to .432 dia. Please advise

That is scary. did he feel any restrictions? If it slugged .432 with no restictions I guess you have found your answer. You need to go to at least a .432 in a hard cast bullet and possibly larger. In a softer cast bullet you may be able to get a more stable flight with a sma;ller dia. Those .429s may never work.

Now remember, this info is all coming from a guy whose 1894 won't shoot past 80 yds at all. If those tunblers are grouping at 100 yds I would be happy.

He did feel some restriction but the overall measurment was micrometer checked at .432

Marlins are almost always generous in the groove diameters.

Two choices: buy larger bullets (or moulds), or try and ramp up the pressure (within reason) to bump up the bullet base and seal the bore. You can also cast the bullets softer, again, within reason.

I'd guess the tumbling loads are lighter pressure loads?

This forum is run by Beartooth Bullets. They make .432 sized 44mags.

Just go to the top of the page and click on the Beartooth Bullets tab.
