Pepper spray or running shoes?
:D
I try my best to stay out of the bear hunting topics but It does seem like if you were going to go hunt brown bears you would at least learn to operate your rifle.

I definitely agree, I don't think I would be going with out a hunting buddy that was proficient at shooting as well. These animals need to be respected.

I've heard that the best way to stop a charging bear is to take away his credit card.

There were at least 3 riflemen and the camera man. Those odds says I should be able to outrun at least one of them! :D
Always wear a good brand of running shoes.

kdub, all you really need in this case is a big stick.
Whack the cameraman across the knee and then run for it. He won't ever keep up carrying that camera on a bad knee. ;)
Hard to say if the sow was really coming straight for the shooter since she wasn't in frame and we'll never know how close she actually got. It's too bad they had to shoot her since she had a cub.

Yes, it is a shame. Not only did they kill the sow but the cub will also die. It looked to me that they did the right thing. That was no false charge and she was intent on doing some damage. It did seem that she was not at top speed.

No kidding, man. That fool is lucky he had a good guide!
Hunter
After watching the Bear charge, my heart sure started pounding. I to had to stop a Bear charge in 1970. I droped her with a Ruger Super Black .44 mag using 240 gr speer SWC with 22 gr. 0f 2400. She dropped at three steps and the lenght of a 870 wing master. No brag, just fact. Her two cubs were as big as the sow, if the would have pressed the charge, I don't beleave I could have stop them. The bullet took half of the spinal cord at the base of the neck and stopped at the hide on the off side. As for the Hunter, I wonder if he was using Belted case in a bump and run action.
I had a black bear charge me when I was going to college up in Maine about 4 or 5 years ago. Not a brown bear but still a bear none the less. My buddy and I were out hunting for partridge and all I had in my Mossberg 500 was 2 3/4" birdshot. Well one of our buddies was walking through the woods trying to flush some partridge towards us and turns out he flushed a bear instead. I saw this black object bounding through the woods about 50 feet a head of us. To be honest it looked like one of those New Findland's. My reaction was who's dog got loose. But it stoped in the middle of the trail we were walking on and threw that theory right out the window. It turned and looked at us and then charged. I was already bringing up my shotgun and slipping the safety and thinking "Man this is going to suck." She got withing 30 feet in the time I was bringing up my shotgun and a truck came up from behind it on the trail and spooked it into the woods. The funny thing was that these guys got out of the truck and were apologizing to us because they thought that they had just ruined us getting the bear. I asked them what the were drinking and went and got them a case of beer as a thank you. In that situation I was glad I had a good hunting partner that kept a level head and didn't freak out. We were on the same page and reacted the same and didn't panic. He told me later on that all he could think about was that he was carrying a 20 gauge single shotgun at the time and how naked he felt. I know it could have been a bluff charge but to be honest it got to close for comfort and was coming right for us. Thirty feet ain't that far and those suckers are so quite and quick.
