Hello new to this forum and so far it looks like a great resource. I recently purchased a Savage 99F in .308 and I was wondering on how to take it down? I want to take it apart and give it a nice cleaning because I have no idea of how it has been cared for over the years. But so far it looks good. I already took the screw off of the fore arm stock and the long bolt out of the butt of the stock. Is there any manuals, books or online instructions that I might be able to find? Or can someone give me a walk through on it? Also is there any tips or warnings that you might have for me like tiny springs flying away or quirks on putting it all back together again? I think that is all the questions I had so far on this nice rifle. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Talk to the guys at 24hour Campfire in the Savage Collectors' forum. Lots of information on stickys. Some most knowledgeable folks post there. Good luck. 'Dito

I have the "Gun Digest Sporting Rifle Take Down & Reassembly Guide"I t has an excellent article on the Savage '99.Iused it to superclean mynew, to Me,modl '99R.
It has great illustration, but I don't know how to use my scanner.
1 remove buttpate,remove stock
2 remove verticalscrewat the left rear of thelower receiver extension, and take off the bolt stop
3 open the action slowley and restrain the cartridge cutoff which will be released toward the right,as thebolt clears it.Remove the cutoff and it's spring toward the right.
4 remove the cap screw from the lever pivot.
5 remove thelever pivot toward the right.
6 Remove the front of the lever from it's pivot loop and turn the rear arch slightly to clear it's inner lugfrom the bolt.Remove the lever downward.
7 Move the bolt all the way to the rear and pull the trigger torelease the sear.Tip the sear to clear the bolt and remove the bolt toward the left rear,Turn thelower rear of the bolt out toward the left to clear thereceiver as the bolt is removed.
8 Remove the hammer and bushing screw from the left side of te bolt at the rear,Note that the screw is usually staked in place, and may require some effort to remove.
9 Remove the hammer and striker assembly toward the rear.Take caretonot lose the hammer rebound spring, which will be released as the assembly is moved out to the rear.
That may be enough for your purpose. If you need more detailed disassembly,I can read more for you.
Good luck
Frank
