The screw is likely a 6-48, which isn't a hardware store standard size. Most gunsmiths have them, or you can order them from Brownells.

I just put a scope on my handi rifle and took the front
sight off, now I cant find a plug screw to put in the
hole in the barrel, any ideas ? I think the screw size is
3-48 but I'm not sure. Ive tried to find the screw locally
with no luck all the gun shops seem to have is a larger
#6 screw. Any help appreciated. Thanks

thanks Jack, No its not a 6-48 its much smaller,
one gun shop told me it was 3-48. I have several
6-48 plug screws from other jobs and they are twice
the size they need to be. the screw in question is from
a New England firearms handi rifle (front sight)

Well, the good news is that 3-48 is a standard size. The bad news is that you'll probably have to modify a long screw yourself. If I was stuck for a 3-48 plug screw, I'd cut the head off a screw, file a slot in it and file down the other end to fit the hole. Brownells has fine screw slot files but they're aren't cheap. (Twice as much as they were in 1999.)

Brownells has 3-48 fillister head screws but you might find them locally.

Thanks for the e-mail Jack, I went to an industrial bolt
and screw company and they had a plug screw that would
fit, by the way, the size is indeed 3-48 Ken

Glad to help. I didn't realize you'd started two threads about this. Double posting causes confusion, and I merged the threads.
