You think its worse than a 115 grain, .30 caliber bullet at 1250 fps?
I thought them Buffalo rifles were supposed to shoot to the next county.

Rowdy,
You're right. I bought a new 1895 (22", ballard) last fall. Didn't mess around, just loaded up one of Marshall's recommended loads: BTB .460"-425gr/H322/50gr. Went to the range & it shot one big ragged hole at 50yds. Haven't shot it at 100 yds, yet. That's all I did with it last year as the snow started to fly early. I don't know what velocity it's doing, but I think that it's zipping along pretty hot. Kills on both ends!

Wind and rain, rain and wind. Like Forrest Gump said. Thar was all kinds of rain. Big drops of rain, tiny drops of rain, sideways rain, and rain from the bottom. That is about what it was this weekend. Got a little shooting in Friday evening. Hope this week is better..

Hornady 85 gr XTP's :D Those babies shoot out of my 32 mag. It one rabbit killing machine, better do head shots though, cuz it cleans and skins em other wise
I wish I had known you liked those, I just threw out a couple boxes of them cause they don't shoot in my 32-20.
JK, about throwing them out but they don't shoot as well as the 100 XTPs or 100 grain Speers for me. I got a new .32 Long revolver I will try them in.
Have you tried any cast bullets?
big medicine

I haven't shot any cast bullets yet. I have some that I got from Oregon Trails but have not worked up a load yet. The load I use for the 32 mag with the Hornady 85 gr XTP is 11.0 gr of Lil'Gun and it is a real tack driver.

It wasn't very productive though. I went with the Win 94 30/30 with three different loads to try out. I'm still looking for that magic one. I tried three different powders with the same Lee C309-155-FN. None of them were any good or an improvement over my old load. Shot 8 targets of 5rds each and shot another 40 offhand at the plates. All the targets went into the trash can. I'm gonna get mad one of these days and dig out the 25-35 and the 250 Savage but I don't want to discourage the .444 shooters so early in the match! :D :D
Watch it Mike or I will just have to slap you fellers with the same gauntlet I did last year. ;) Remember?????

Ok Ok I learned a lot last year, my rookie year at the PM.
Most important I learned if you get lucky with a target or two enjoy your couple of days in the sunshine because somebody's gonna send in a real target and swat you!! :D But that also can work both ways!! :D

Ain't it da truth?? :D The only reason I think I won in my competition is that the dreaded Dr. A. was too busy to compete. ;) He beat a lot of us out at the last minute in past years. I think he stays busy shooting gazillions of targets and then sends the best in during the last days of the PM. :D

I'm buying new flip flops too! :D
I've been waiting all day for Mike to post. I wanted all four I know will beat that .420 lined up in a row. :D
Like I said earlier. That's about the best I can do and I have no intention of shooting 2,000 rounds of 32-20 off the bench again like I did last summer.
I'm going to work with my home cast bullets and shoot offhand. Maybe make another run at it towards the end.
Did I miss a stupendous .35 Rem score? Big Medicine shot a fine target with his but it was already up there...
Also, kudos to Beartooth bullets. The .420 group was shot with Marshall's 115 grain 32-20 bullet.

I shot a one-holer! Then I took a second shot...
Just got in from some preliminary shooting, and I think Team Far Farty Far is gonna be running scared... After they factor in some mitigating circumstances:
1) You know how it's calm in the eye of a hurricane? Well I'm as far from any hurricane's eye as I can be.
2) I (possibly) lost count while pacing off my range, and I (possibly) counted the last 20 yards twice.
3) The duct tape on my scope mount needs tightening.
4) The cat was warming his nose on the barrel. Jerk. (He coulda TRIED to hold still.)
5) There was a big earthquake in the Solomon Islands the other day, and some aftershocks must have been jiggling my targets.
6) I was feeling so badly about the crushing blow I was going to deal to Team .444's self esteem, that my vision was blurred with tears of pity.
7) Space. Madness.
8) I'm shooting old factory rounds today, and I'm pretty sure it was "Floor Sweepings Day" in the powder room.
9) I was DRUNK! (On love. For a certain someone's flip-flops. Are those Calvin Kleins?)
10) My panties were riding up.

They aren't really designed for the 300 Savage But I shoot them seated to an OAL of 2.475 and tumble lubed. They look funny but the gun loves them. The gun has an old Tasco 4x which I don't really like and I'm changing but I almost hate to the way it's shooting. Already sent in the target Ken, i'm saying sub .890" and with a new load, i think i can make it work...BTB 290gr at maybe 2000 fps :)
sub .890"
Group size or postal match score? Distance?

I've got a 30-30 XLR that hasn't shown too much promise in the accuracy dept. It's the only Marlin of mine that wears a scope but my older 336A will outshoot it in spite of the aperture sights. I have not fired the XLR recently and now I learn that it should have been placed in a dark closet as punishment for poor performance.
Friday night is the last night for the indoor bullseye league we shoot during the winter. After that i get serious about kicking the posteriors of you young guys. And yes, to me VTDW is included with the young guys. Wish me luck?

Ken;postal match score, open sight bench.
Steelbanger, I wish you good luck. FWIW, my 336XLR shoots slightly less crappy with the Sierra 125 grain bullet and a full dose of 748.
Rowdy, that would be a pretty good score if you were shooting a Browning. I think it needs another spell in the closet. I can see, perfectly, mine holding up a tomato plant.

Rowdy, your memory is too good. I will have to send in that target now.
I 've got a question for the Marlin experts. According to the serial # this gun was made in 1976 and it says "Micro groove Barrel-Mod.336". The wood and fit and finish I actually like better the some of the new ones I've handled. Does the micro grooved barrel bode well for me and my cast bullets or not???
To answer your question, yes, microgroove does just as well with cast bullets. I've got an 1894 .44 mag also made in '76 from a pawnshop. It was a total rebuild/refinish project, but after stripping off the yellowing varnish the previous owner had put over the Marlin factory finish I found the wood to have a little nicer figure that todays standard, even has one birds eye in it. It is also an accurate shooter, one that I use for hunting as well as for cowboy action shooting.
I know I'll catch some corrections on this, but I swear that even though the barrel is stamped MG, looking at the rifling itself it is ballard type.

As far as I know, there is no rule about having to send in your targets before the end of the match.

Steelbanger, I bet you weren't shooting any targets today! I just hope you weren't shoveling snow! We didn't have to shovel any snow here but you had to hang onto your hat all day! I got to shoot last thursday evening and I was pleased with my new (old) Marlin 30-30. I think with a little work I'll have some more Marlin generated targets to send in. I was hoping to shoot some offhand targets with my old (1897) Marlin 1894 32-20 but after a couple of lousy targets the firing pin broke! I think I made a grave tactical error though. I started off with what is probably my most accurate Lever and got lucky and shot well for a time. I'm afraid it might be all downhill from here so I guess I'll enjoy it temporarily and keep trying for that one hole target load and gun. :)
Well, I have the next five days off and the weather is looking fine. Maybe I can get something done (besides yardwork).
My home cast 30-30 bullets are showing some promise. Maybe the XLR has found it's diet. I might just have to rig some good iron sights on it and make a run at the 50 yard match. It sure would pain me to see a .444 win it two years straight.
Nice Turkey! Tell me a story? That had to be a fun Hunt!
Well I saw this turkey and 5 hens and went after him. They came out in the evenings. I like that don't have to get up early. LOL I set up and he came out about 50 yards from me and started strutting and going away from me. He would not come closer. He and 3 hens stayed out from me for 2 hours. Just out of range. The next day they came out again 75 yards and fed away from me. No way would he or the hens come to my calls. I left them alone for 2 days and went back. A hen came out first, 10 minutes later 2 more hens came out and walked past me at 20 yards. Then here he comes strutting. At 20 yards I pulled the trigger on Bow, my perfect 10g Flint. aAnd when the smoke cleared he was a flopping. Just being at the right place at the right time.

Thanks. I just got into one of those rare zones that day. I'm actually more proud of the off hand targets I posted with a Savage 99 (300 Sav). The rifle has a nice Marbles tang sight, but that front bead more than covers that small target, especially so at 50 yards. I had to line up the bead between two adjacent targets and hope I was close to the one I couldn't see.
Besides, I just had to get the Brownings on the board to silence the naysayers. Next time the Marlins are going out to the range though.

Actually a friend of a friend by the name of Larry Landis. I liked it so much I had him build me a second. I'm in dangerous territory here because I'm really a rookie with black powder. Anyway if it means anything to you they have Getz barrels and Siler locks. Not sure about the spelling. I've killed two deer with the muzzle loader and missed more birds than I killed. I'm ok on basically away shots on birds but the closer it gets to a true crossing shot the better chance is with the bird! I think the guns are patterned after what they called trade guns and my friend and Mr. Landis shoot theirs without rear sights but I had him put ones on mine. They are amazing well balanced and a lot of fun to shoot.

Who's ever rule that it is that there has to be a flyer...well they can just bite!! ;) I'm heading out to shoot this evening, I hope I don't have any of those to show when I get back, but I wouldn't bet on it

What's really sad is that if you were zeroing in your rifle it would put one on top of the other until you get it where you want it then it starts throwing those flyers at you! Why???
I was so sad I had to take a long nap this afternoon.
In this case the reason for the flier is not too hard to figure out. A clean barrel is the culprit. I had been working with my loads and was well pleased with the 1 1/2" or so groups I was getting. I started testing seating depths, cleaning every five shots. This target was a shocker.
The XLR tomato stake does seem much more consistant with these low velocity cast loads than it ever was with jacketed.
Bad thing is, I have about a half ounce of this powder left. Still, I've never had much problem going from lot to lot of powder.

LOL, The shad we fish for in the top of the Cheasapeak Bay in the Susquehanna below the Conogowingo (sp) Dam are Hickory shad and the occasional American Shad. The Hickory's aren't as big as Americans but when conditions are right there are a lot of them there. It is catch and release fishing only. They are about 14-20 inches and on light spinning and fly rods they are a lot of fun! A 14" Hickory shad will out fight a 20" Bass. Yesterday we had the best day we've ever had in 6-8 years. We have no way of keeping accurate count but the two us fiquire we caught a minimum of 125-150 shad. We fished from 7:30am to 4:30 pm and from 8:00 on we were almost constantly catching fish.
They frown on you shooting them or not releasing them so we settled on a cold beer and an open pit ham sandwich on the way out of town! What a great day! :)
I have shot a bunch the past five days. I'm thinking about growing some tomatoes and fishing for the rest of the summer.

Mike, as soon as I can match your offhand score last year, with me shooting off a rest, I'll start trying some offhand.
It should be illegal to be as hard headed as I am. I've shot 200 cast bullets the last few days using lube I thought would work, lube I wanted to work. I got so frustrated yesterday I boiled all that stuff off of them and tumble lubed them with liquid alox. Loaded and shot five of them just now and got a 1.075" group.
Of course, everytime I think I have this rifle figured out it proves me wrong.

I've been working with my 1895G as of late. I figure I'm going to take back the lead in the Bench-Scopes match to save Marlin's good name! Going to do it with a short barrel rifle too!
I've learned head placement on that sawed off carbine stock is everything. I also was reminded why we are shooting 5 bullets instead of 3. I though I had this one in the bag until shots 4 and 5! Oh well, I'm going to keep at this until I win. You Browning, Savage, and Winchester guys are in deep dooky! Just remember when I woop you, this is my pooriest shooting Marlin. I often talk about it's role on my ranch when I need a temporary corner post! That big fat barrel makes a good one!

I was out today but couldn't find the center of the targets. I'll send a few targets out to Michael because I'm sure he could use a good laugh. Rain tomorrow and weekend commitments so no more shooting until next week. Scoped rifle will be my next attempt at shooting a centered group. Got a new (to me) 336SS-LTD in 35 Rem and mounted a 2.5X Leupold on it. No dies here for that cartridge so my first attempts will be with Federal factory 200 grain loads and will also take the XLR out for some fresh air. It's been in a dark closet for three weeks now.

Mike, I have your target pulled and will have to scan it once my wife is done with the printer. I will have it corrected in the next week standings. Sorry about the mix up and the delay of getting your fine target posted.
Rowdy, I'm saving the 444T. I've never given my 45's a fair shake and right now I'm shooting the heck out of both my 1895s as I produce some reloading charts for the boolits my TLC460-350-RF and TLC460-425-RF molds drop. I'm collected pressure trace data with each of these boolits with H4198, H322, Benchmark, H335, H4895, BL-C2 and Varget. I'm doing this both with the 45-70 and the 450 Marlin. It's a lot of shooting. I've gotten through H4198 and H322 with the 350 boolit and was starting on Benchmark when I had the rifle to PC cable fail. I ordered two more cables and decided being I wasn't going to work on this stuff, I might as well work on a "Postal Match" load for each boolit and powder. H4198 kept me occupied all day with the 1895G and I basically have nothing to show for it. I'm really enjoying the shooting for my boolit charts, it's teaching me a lot of things about the boolits, powders, and rifles.
I'm posting that data here:

You might do better with a post front sight, I know you would do better with an aperture front.
The biggest thing, I think, to shooting good groups with peep sights is to NOT try to line up the front sight in the rear. Your eye will do a better job automatically than you will trying to get it just right. Try to get your face on the stock the same way everytime, ignore the rear sight, focus on the target.
If the bullseye won't come into sharp focus you can make it do so by changing the size of the rear aperture.
If your friend doesn't take it let me know! That's a beauty! Is it smooth bore?
Mike,It is a 54 rifle. Sorry, He paid me a long time ago. He told me to build it bacl in 2003. He was in no hurry, he has pleanty of guns and I built him one back it 2000. Building my cabin has kept me from doing any extra work. I just build guns when i have the time. I don't build guns for a living. I only build one or to Muzzle loaders a year right now. When I get my cabin and shop finished and get moved maybe i will have more time.
I'm certainly curious! Can you shoot at some official postal match targets and post pictures of them here? Then you can show us whatcher talkin' bout, Willis.

Don't forget the concentration too! JB it's like that softball you're hitting, if you're concentrating you can see the stitches on the ball as it is coming at you! Same thing with open sights!
Hey Whip, start a thread in the muzzle loading section and show some pictures of the guns and accoutrements you have made. You and Mike have me craving a flintlock shotgun.
I don't have time right now. I am busy packing. I will do that when I get back the middle of June. Everybody keep your powder dry. I'll Be Back.
P.S. I have several Flintlock shotguns I have built over the years. 4- 28g single barrels, 1-16g, and My 10g. 1-double barrel 20g flint, also have a orginial 1817 harpers ferry musket, and 3 old orginial cap lock double barrel that are shootable. One 14g.and two 12g

You might as well sell those 444's. I picked the gun that's going to win the open sight classes today! It is a Savage Model 99 made in 1927 in the .303 savage Caliber. The bore is shiny and the brass and dies are ordered. I think I've got a good reciever sight located too! I can't wait to start shooting targets! :D

Nope, didn't scare me at all. I've been busy shooting Pressure Trace stuff in my 1895G and 1895MR. I shoot "match" style in case I see something good but it is hard to concentrate on the target because of the need to monitor the cable connected to the gun, interface box, and laptop. I don't even look at the target until I walk down to set up new targets. I did get this little prize with 47.0-grains of Benchmark out of my 1895G with my TLC460-350-RF boolit at 100-yards. I will make a small adjustment to the crosshairs and then let you have it!
