Michael,
I will probably bring the 336ER and the 1895G, with the ER being the one I would prolly use. I have asked my brother if he would want to go. Of course he wants to, but we already booked a bear hunt for next fall so he was wondering about getting the time off work. About when were you wanting the hunt to take place? Our only other hog hunt took place in Florida and was a complete disaster. I have no doubt that this one will be something to remember.

The firearms selection sounds good. As far as the date, any time after the first weekend of the new year. The sooner the better as the hogs will tend to be more dependent on feed. This is thick country and feed gets them out of the brush. I guess March tends to be a very good time with weather, etc.

I talked to Shorty, today’s his b-day the big 13, and he is tweaked about winning a Marlin hat. I think it’s safe to say he’ll be shooting again in next years match… :)

Up next for him, reloading 101. And while he is loading his ammo, he might as well load mine too… :D

Rowdy,
Be careful giving out those big bore rifles to a young'un. My son developed quite a flinch after begging to shoot my Ruger .458 when he was about 11-12. He's recovered from the flinch but even in his 40's he still mentions that 458 episode once in a while. Of course the 444 is only a minor player in the big bore scheme of things so that would be a good place to start the small fry.

If they are starting to call you names because of having grandchildren what will I be called now that our first great-grandchild is expected early next year?

Rowdy
09-28-2007, 09:18 AM
Right-on Steelbanger, that’s good advice and I will take it farther. With the new shooters you need to keep the range time short and fun.
A 444 Marlin with moderate loads is actually fun to shoot but it will never be a 458 Win Mag elephant stopper nor was it designed to be one  …

You need to ask VTDW about nicknames, but it needs to sound older than ‘Old phart’ :p

Congrats on the great.

Oh yeah, there will be another postal match and next year I plan on participating.

OK, all prizes from the Reamy ranch are enroute. What a day! Me and the Mrs. started at 9:30 and went to the PO at 2:30! Something over 50 packages! It actually went smooth and better than expected. Hopefully everything will arrive in good shape. Please remember your letters to the sponsors this is very, very important! The list is on the PM web site.

When I emptied the Marlin box, I found another 12 knives so I held another drawing and will update the list in the morning. It has been a busy day and I just can't get to it now. Also in the morning, I will pass the necessary info to Marshall at BTB concerning those prizes and the same to the fellow at Skinner Sights. I will also send the info to Steelbanger for the certificates. Next week the appropriate place holders will get information about setting up their avatars and the PMIV avatars are going to turn to a little red "X". I will help you get rid of those if you need.

If you shot with your youngster, the prizes are coming together.

OK guys, I just mailed your certificates. If there are any discrepancies please let me know & I'll fix them for you. It gets confusing for an older guy - trying to get all those numbers correct.

Marlin rifles dominated the top spots once again with only two non-conformists using "other" - Savage & Browning. Oh, the shame!

Good luck to all in the upcoming hunting seasons. I'm sure your summer spent at the rifle range will pay off in venison. Maybe you should send some backstraps to Ranch Dog.

That is the nice thing about the way the prizes are awarded. Anyone can win anything, so no one should be discouraged from shooting and entering. No matter what kind of target you send in, if it has 5 holes on the paper, you could walk away the big winner, I think that is great!

Hey Luis:
Posting pictures is a bit tricky, so we put the details into a sticky thread in General.

http://www.shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=34239&page=2&pp=15

Nick summed up the details here:
http://www.shootersforum.com/attachment.htm?attachmentid=5609

The two main problems are that the picture is too big, over 100,000 bytes, and not waiting for the picture to upload if you're on dial-up.

Hey, I just got to see how those ebony grips turned out, please send the pics to Mike so we can all see them.

The story behind how the ebony wood became available is pretty interesting in and of itself. The wood was part of some African folk art that I won at a silent auction at the local Goodwill. There were two pieces, each with a bust of a woman and a man carved out of real ivory. I was mainly interested in the ivory to turn into grips or inlays for one of my rifles. After removing the busts I figured out that the wood they were mounted on was african ebony. This is a tone wood meaning that it is used in instruments for it's musical quality, as well as the wood that was originally used for the black keys on pianos. Ivory was used for the white keys.

This wood is so dense it does not float, and due to it's high silica content it will polish to a high shine without oil or other finish. It will dull wood working tools very quickly, but it's very easy to work once you know it's characteristics.

I donated the remainder of what I wasn't going to use so Mike G. could work his magic and add another prize to the Postal Match.

I'm using what I've kept to lengthen the butt stocks of two of my rifles, as my long arms need more wood added to compensate.

A 32-20 or .357 sure would be a nice rifle for a youngster to start out on, especially loaded with grandpa's cast bullet loads.

I'd been trying to shoot some every afternoon but the dark and cold have finally about beat me down. I'm ready to get going on the match too.

I think the .357/.38 Marlin is a great starter for youngsters. Start them with mild .38 cowboy loads and when the time is right go up to .357 loads.

The .32 is also a great rifle but would become limited to varmits and small game when that time comes as well. But as I like to say, I'm not a gun collector, more of a gun gatherer, so the more (Marlins) the better. :D

I've been kinda following this occasionally and this looks like... too simple, but good & fun things often are. You mean I could just take my Rossi 92 in 44 WCF, lay it across a sandbag and shoot the Ranch Dog target at 50 yds, mail it in, and there's even a remote possibility that I could luck out & win a real-live Beartooth hat?????????!!!!!!!!! And I could even shoot another one standing? Holy cow!

I'm in for the next one. ;) Now if I could just get some of the snow to recede...

Wishing you all the safest & Blessings in your shooting for the coming year. This is a great forum.

If any buddies are reading, if I win a BTB Tech Guide you can have it, but you can't have the one on my shelf 'cause my notes from Marshall are in there, so just lay off...

wig,
That is the beauty of the match, it is simple. Go out and shoot as many targets as you like and send them in. We have had good support with donations, and the best thing is that anyone who sends in targets can win, that way no one should be discouraged from sending in targets. My son got a Marlin hat for a prize that he wears everyday. He is pretty proud of that hat and is talking about shooting again. We may have created a monster:)

Wow! Thanks Ken. I just really don't have the time to start another hobby right now. I can't load the bullets I have now. I use the Hornady swagged swc for my plinking and they are 20 bucks for 200 locally. I use BTB for hunting and I have a settled load now so the development is over for that.

If I ever start doing a lot of shooting, I will have to learn. Maybe if I ever get to retire and my health is good. Whoops. Who can retire before they have to these days?

Thanks again Ken.

My plan is to "Shoot and Shoot More Often". Might even get that .308/99 in the mix this year. The 1894 may get another lapping so there may be graphite around some of the holes.

That work does get in the way of a man's hobbies. I've been more or less steadily employed since I was 12 (my daddy kept me busy with the farm and his survey business) and still ain't overly fond of it.

I'm not overly fond of it either. I work as a Physician Assistant in a rural area. The day are long, I spend two days of my life every week on call for 24 hrs and I'm usually up most of that. This past month has been bad, I average 2-4 hours sleep a night for those call nights, and I'm expected to work a full day with a packed clinic the following day. I missed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years with my family this year, because of this job. There are days that I could just walk away from it all.

We have been telling them that, but for people that don't have to do it, they don't see what the problem is. they can't get anybody as stupid as we were to come here for what they want to pay them and the hours they want them to work. I have come close to leaving a couple times, they only thing that has kept me here is the friends we have, it is a great place to live, and I have some really great patients. One perk is that I can get onto a lot of ground to hunt and fish. The funny thing is that the gov limits the amount of hours a truck driver can be on the road, or a pilot can fly, but they expect us to go days without sleep sometimes and not make any mistakes. Since I have been here they worst two week period I had was a few years ago. I had 156.5 hours actually spent at work, but on average now it is between 96 and 110 hours every two weeks. It gets old.

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

A pretty woman makes her husband look small
And very often causes his downfall
As soon as he married her and then she starts
To do the things that will break his heart

But if you make an ugly woman your wife
A-you'll be happy for the rest of your life
An ug-a-ly woman cooks meals on time
And she'll always give you peace of mind

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Don't let your friends say you have no taste
Go ahead and marry anyway
Though her face is ugly, her eyes don't match
Take it from me, she's a better catch

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Yes he did, but he isn’t sure why yet.

Setting next to my 1895 CB it looks so small, like a toy, like a little sissy girl’s gun. I was so embarrassed while talking to the salesman at Cabelas, I had to tell him I was buying it for my granddaughters to shoot. Maybe they can get it to shoot, cause I sure cant, not yet anyway.

Oh I forgot- is it still considered “bad form” to disrespect ones own firearm?
