Well heck I'm the first to get it started....Where to begin? What cartridge and brand of rifle will rein king this year? I'm going to say that the Marlins will again take top honors, lets see if any of the Winchester, Savage, or Browning shooters can prove that wrong :D I can't wait to see groups from the new Marlin 308 Marlin Express...will it be king? The 444 was pretty much boss last year, will it be the same again this year? Lets see what Rowdy and VTDW have up their sleeve for this year.... Let the trash talkin begin!! ;)

Between the operation/recovery and the fact I could not get a load to shoot (last year) I can't really talk much trash, but I'll talk some truth...Me and the CB is gonna clean up the fifty yard open match....... I've already had VDTW begging me for lessons....

A 444T and the TLC432-265-RF is going to take top honors this year in the Bench - Scope match. I can feel it in my bones! I haven't really shot in my own match the last two years because of all the work here on the ranch. That has changed... the work is done, time to shoot!

Yesiree, I will be getting lessons from Tubby come June at Jakes Wyoming Shootout but he will only have a couple of days to improve my shooting ability.
Ahemmm...Michael. My T will be here this week!!! I'll be shooting the same boolit as you but my secret lube should get the job done. ;)

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but my new 336ER is going to take top honors in the scope bench match. I've been shooting some teeny tiny groups already. And I've only tried one bullet and powder so far!

Temps in the 20's and winds in the 30's. Too cold to sit around at benches and shoot but I needed to shoot something so I ran out to the club and shot steel plates until I was frozen. I 'm piling up cast bullets and reloads for warm weather! I'm still working out which guns I'm going to challenge those .444's with!!! :D Bring on Spring!

Mike Buchanan, you're a better man than I. We had 8º up here this morning and I don't even want to know what the wind chill was with those 35 mph gusts! I didn't even consider going to the range today. The only shooting I will be doing this week is indoors on Friday night-my clubs winter smallbore rifle league goes until mid April. By then it should be fine for outdoor shooting.
Hope your daughters wedding went well.

I second Mike’s motion; “Bring on Spring!” :D
Now I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, snuffed out dreams and such…But I just finished-up firelapping my 444 XLR this past weekend…And the results are nothing short of spectacular…
So I come into this years match swinging a pair of mighty 444’s both with open sights.
These 444’s are going to look mighty fine taking both 1st and 2nd place certificates this year…

It's 40 degrees and I could not wait any longer, The V-Star and me went on a little ride this afternoon to the local gun shop and I picked up some 165 gr. laser cast for the dirty-thirty. Gonna start with 8 grains of unique with that bullet and see what happens with my old 94 Winchester. It didn't help matters much since I took my wife to see Wild Hogs last sunday. :D
It was 75 here today. By the time Spring arrives for you fellers it will be too hot to shoot here. :D

75 degrees!!!! Here it hit the middle 20's but along with 3-4 inches of snow and a lot less wind than yesterday but no shooting today! :(
If it soon doesn't warm up a little here the one end of my house is going to settle under the weight of all the bullets I've been casting and squirreling away.
I don't know what's going to be more fun, beating those big 444's with homecast bullets in the winchesters, or using the Savages! :D

If the rain holds off might get some range time in afternoon or on Sunday afternoon! Life is looking up! I'll soon be able quit casting bullets and actually start shooting them! Look out Rowdy and all you .444 shooters JB's got some premium, custom cast, spellbound, RCBS bullets for his .32 Special from me today!! :D :D :D
I guess I will take time this weekend to swap sights out and clean barrels. I'm looking forward to it, haven't been shooting iron sights lately.

The second from the left and the far right one are the same gun. It's a Winny 1894 38-55 with a 26" barrel made in 1908. I have a ragged one hole sight on it and it's a fun gun to shoot and pretty accurate.
I was just trying to learn how to use the new camera and post pictures and those guns were out. My problem with levers is I like them all, Winnies , Marlins, and Savages! Don't have any other brand levers yet.
I'll try to keep on JB to get shooting this summer. I already told him the secret to shooting the PM is to shoot thousands of rounds of lead and eventually if lucky you get a decent target or two, right? :D

Went to shooting preserve with the dog and shot chukars all morning and had a ball. On the way home my buddy and I stopped at a little gun shop. He has some beautiful levers and two used Marlin .444's like new for around 350.00.
I am announcing my St Paddy's day resolution right now! If I can't knock at least one of the .444 Marlins out of the three categories they controlled in the PM last year then the only suitable punishable I know of would be to get one and be forced to load for it and shoot it! :D :D :D

Mike, I just went and reviewed last years scores. I noted in both bench matches there was only one .444 in each match that was in the top ten (granted both won the match) and only one .444 was even entered in the offhand matches (which also won).
I believe a 30-30 will win the 100 yard bench contest this year. :D

I’m a little confused; Just how hot is too hot for shooting…And what is the minimum temp. that KenK flip-flops can be worn… tia

I like the new target, I hadn't realized until now RD changed it. When I pull a shot offhand it is always low so this should make it easier to get all five on there.
Got the flip flops on right now Rowdy. Like they say, it's not the heat so much as the humidity. I really fight my glasses in the summer. Go back and forth between using them or not.
Speaking of targets; last year I got to feeling guilty about using my boss's printer toner and took a whole ream of paper to Office Depot to have copies made. Its the only way to go.

I don't know if my chest is ready for .444's yet but eventually I'll have to try one. $350 isn't a very good price for a used one if you can buy them new for 414.00. I'll have to keep looking.
The 1894 38-55 wasn't my grandfathers. I bought it from a gunsmith in the early seventies. My grandfathers rifle which my dad still has is a Win Model 54 30-06 with an old Baush & Lomb 3-9 with the adjustments in the mounts. It's one I wish could talk! :D

I had planned on buying one but I've kind of cooled off on the idea. I don't need the extra power and hate to spend the money on reloading another caliber. I sure do wish Marlin would make that MX configured rifle in 30-30.
However, depending on early accuracy reports, I might change my mind.

All the left over parts when you butcher pigs thrown in a big pot with all the organs you didn't use, then cooked and mixed with different spices and cornmeal, buckwheat flour etc. there's all kinds of recipes. You slice it about 1/2" thick and brown it in a frying pan. Then you need a couple of slices of butter bread and big glass of cold milk. Hmmm! I'm hungry for it now. It's traditionally a cold weather breakfast food. In some of the more rural parts of Penna. Churches make thousands of pounds of scrapple and sausage in the winter and sell it for fund raisers. It's good but not a heart smart food way too much fat in it. :(
I think I'll go shopping for flip flops tomorrow. It will take my mind off scrapple and kill some time until the PM starts! :D :D

Yes, this item would be legal as long as it only supports the forearm of the rifle. You could use any bag or even a jacket to accomplish what this rifle does.

Hit 68 or 70 degrees today, wow! Ran to club after work and shot the Win 94 44 mag, Marlin 1894 44 mag and the marlin 1894 .357. Put up targets at 50 yards and really got depressed. Ended up shooting about 150 rds at the steel plates. Had a ball but boy I am rusty! either that or when they put my rib cage back together they didn't line up all the ribs right! :D :D :D

Too bad it doesn't start today. 60's, no wind, the geese are flying, just a great day. And I have some time to shoot. By the time Saturday rolls around it'll be in the 30's with a brisk wind. Oh well, we do have until September.
I would truly like to kick those 444 shooters butts with my tiny 25-20. We'll see.

Well hawg killer....give em heck with that 25-20. I'm going to try with my 32 mag and 25-20 and even the 218 Bee. ;)
I wish I had a smaller cal. to shoot. I have been looking for an older beater 30-30 so I could rebarrel it to 25-35. I just happen to have a 25cal barrel just waiting. I wouldn't mind having one champered to 256 win mag also. A friend has a 92. chambered in 256 and in is a sweet shooter. I almost bought a 32 mag once. Wish I had now. Money was tite, and still is. Maybe after taxes I can afford something else.

One thing I like about the smaller cal's is how cheap they are to shoot. I can shoot a lot for almost nothing. The 45-70, 444 ect take a lot of powder. With the 32 mag, 25-20, 218 a pound of powder goes a long way :D

False alarm, I had the wrong aperture in my sight.
I believe this is about a good a 4 out of 5 shot group as I have shot with iron sights. That hole to the left either has 4 shots in it or I missed the whole target with one.

Big Med,
I'm looking forward to seeing how the Zipper performs. The weather here in Northern NY is still winter and I probably won't be doing any shooting for at least a month. I've got everything that I need to start working with the Zipper. I'm waiting for Jamisons to make another batch of (properly head stamped) brass. In the meantime, have obtained 150 pcs. of re-formed .30-30 RP brass. Speer 46gr FP bullets. I have Redding resizing and seating dies and special order Lee trimmer and FCD. One of the guys over on MO (Tomray) was kind enough to share some load data with me (published data as well as his favorite loads). He found that his Zipper worked well with low/moderate loads at around 3,100 fps. Of course, you can safely, within published data/specs, push it a LOT faster (i. e., 3700+fps) but I don't see any reason to do so if I can achieve the results I want at the lower velocity. Of course, during load development I"m gonna have to throw a couple of "hot" ones down the barrel! So, soon I'll be off & running.
Lee was pretty quick on providing the trim & FCD die. They quote 6-8 weeks, but they were in my mail box within 3 weeks. Nice people to deal with and a nice product.
Best,
Dan

I realize it is a headache for the brass but like Dan, I was just going to SO the dies and stuff from Lee. I did that with the 450 Marlin.

Not here, windy & 30º right now and we got close to a foot of snow. Top that with a broken wiper arm in the car and a truck that won't engage in 4-wheel mode. Oh happy weekend. But, later today it's corned beef & cabbage for St. Patrick's day dinner, and probably a green beer in memory of my dad.
Haven't tried any Texas hog yet. Last evening we made some sausage but we'll probably start with a roast for our first taste. As you would expect, this meat is much leaner that commercial pork.
Hope you find something at Harrisburg. Ever see the girl there that sells raffle tickets for motorcycles?

In my part of Idaho, we have it easy. The temperature and wind speed are the same number! Makes it easier to remember, and it even applies when it's -25 (the wind just blows from the opposite direction).
Today sure is nice, though. The wind isn't awake yet, so if I can get out, I'm going to sight in my receiver sight and shoot for score on the same target just to go easy on everyone!

Stopped by the gun store on the way home, found a Marlin Cowboy 45/70 looking for a new home only $589.00. That was the first time I’ve handled a cowboy model, I gotta say even at 8# and a 26” bbl. :) They have a much different feel, almost like they are lighter than the 444’s. It must be the combination of the longer bbl. and the skinny stocks...
What do you guys think, worth that much or not?? And how are they to shoot, compared to the 1895 with a 22” bbl??
Nice shooting ;) Dave

Sorry i missed your post before I left. There were very few single shots and most were not in great shape. There were a few nice ones but it seems like every time I'm attracted to a gun it's four times what I have to spend. I only remember one Ballard in very nice shape for $1200.00 but I don't even remember the caliber or any thing much other than it looked great until I saw the price.
This show had a good number of Savage 99's with the prices going from $400 to 1200.00 depending on age, caliber, and condition. The Winchester plain jane 94's in 30-30 seem to have settled down a little in price but any interesting caliber, or model is still sky high. Why are used Marlin 39's so high? I didn't see one for less than $400.00 and I thought they're still made. Are the older ones better?

Well to start off I go by 7-30 Waters on the Marlin Owners forum but it's been so long since I posted here that I don't remember my password. So I had to pick a new name and password.
Hey VTDW thanks for the invite to the great smack off. This sounds like fun. Let the smack off begin.
Anyway, I went to the range yesterday and shot both leverguns. My trusty Winchester 94AE 7-30 Waters and Marlin 336C 35 Remingoton. I had to shoot open sights at 100 yards because there were other members shooting. Both guns shot under 3" groups but no where near the center. I will need to adjust my sights for 50 yards. Then the shooting can begin.
Finally, I will need to pick a day when the range is unoccupied and move a bench up to the fifty yard line.
Good luck to all. You might as well give up now. My trusty Winchester 7-30 Waters will be the one this year. Just kidding, I like my Marlin the best.

leverman,
Glad you made it here. This time of the year for the Postal Match is a great help in really getting to know your rifles. Thanks to the match, many can call their shots as the barrel starts to warm up in anticipation of the stringing. By the time hunting season rolls around you will have several tried and true loads worked up for your hunting situations and will be confident about them. That is a good thing eh?

Can I pretend my T/C pistol is a levergun and send in some targets for it. It is chambered in a 357 Maximum.
Seriously though, my rifle club needs to put in some pvc pipe at 50 yards to support the target stands. Looks like i get the task of doing the job. Once that is done I can shoot at 50 yards with my leverguns.

but the target is really a best guess. The smaller the peep the better though.
I'm using a .050 aperture, I believe that is as small as Williams makes. The Merit adjustable aperture closes down to .022. It's $50 though.
I generally shoot a little better without my glasses. I keep thinking if I had the adjustable aperture I might could get it dialed in with the glasses.

I have a stack of targets to send in that I shot Saturday. Didn't get back out yesterday wind was blowing He$$. Spent all day today setting at the court house for a jury pool, and couldn't get out this evening. Now they are calling for rain everyday through Sunday.
But ya got to get at least one target sent in :D :D ;)
Today's effort. I never posted a picture of a Match target before this but given my heartache with the post office last year I thought I would. You can see my shooting buddy in the back.

I was at annual training last weekend through the mid part of this week. I only had one day at home this week as I'm leaving for Houston for my brother's wedding over this weekend. After that, I'm all about shooting for the match along with some pressure testing.
I got some off hand targets shot last weekend up at my cabin. The preasure is on. I was loading some different cast bullets to try out for the 100 yard match. I chambered one and it wouldn't eject. When I cleaned my gun before I left I got in a hury and forgot to put the ejector spring back in it. It is only 150 miles away. I guess if I shoot this week I can pry them out with a screw driver LOL. I hate it when things like this happens LOL. Targets are on the way.

I got to the range on Tuesday with the 25-20 and managed to get one fair target out of a half-dozen attempts. I should send it in because it may be my only chance to get in the top ten this year.
Now, on to something where I have much experience, eating. We were at Mikes home last evening for a birthday get-together. Roast Texas hog was the main attraction and it was delicious! The meat was falling apart tender and made with a hint of barbecue flavoring. Even my non-game-eating daughter enjoyed it. To whomever wins the hunt this year, make sure you take along someone that knows how to hunt those hogs. I'm glad I did.
Good deal. I guess that wild hog is even leaner than this new and improved lean pork you buy at the store? How did ya'll end up getting it home?

KenK,
We worked late into the evening when Mike shot the hog. Got it skinned, cut up, de-boned and on ice. The Reamy's patiently waited with our supper until we were finished butchering. The meat was put in a cooler with ice. RD suggested we take it back home as checked luggage since we are allowed two bags each and only had one. So, we bought a wheeled cooler at WalMart which also had a handle so we coud pull it around the terminal. We bought a few freezer ice packs too. Airline regulations allow 50 pounds for each checked bag and our cooler of meat weighed 48 pounds. If it had weighed over 50 there was a $25 charge and with Continental nothing over 70 pounds is allowed. It was inspected by the TSA and sealed with their security tape.
Summing it up, there was no problem getting it back home.
Big Medicine,
I got a kink in my neck from looking up every time I got around RD. He's a really tall fellow. I used to be 5'11" but may have shriveled a bit (only in height of course).
I am sure not one to point fingers...BUT it looks like Michael has put on a few lbs. Diana made him do it. ;) I snapped this pic one morning when Michael was on his way to work now that they allow guns in the cockpit.

Unrealistic expectations?
Mainly just a lack of consistancy. It will shoot ok one day and terrible the next. I have fought fouling issues which seem to be getting better. I dunno, I'm just tired of fooling with it.
It shoots plenty good enough for a deer rifle but I don't want or need another deer rifle. I bought this thing for a lever action match rifle and it surely is not that.

The buttstock is tight and the scope is tight. Forend and magazine tube are loose.

Perhaps its time to teach that XLR of yours, to show a little respect… :(
Case in point; after my 444 XLR refused to shoot anything short of a pattern last week, I pulled the scope and mount. Well, I have to admit that those psuedo-levers with the pointy bullet capability do shoot well!! That's some great shooting.
If we can get rid of some of the snow up here, I'll go face the deer flies and no-see-ums and shoot some targets. That'll be about May. I don't look forward to the flying pests, just no way to keep 'em off ya'. Just miserable. Spent a lot of years in SE Asia in the late 60's/early 70's swatting bugs; but without any spraying here in the mountains, I actually think that it is worse (or maybe I'm just getting old and it "bugs" me more).

I was pi$$ to say the least. Without being torn to crap that was one heck of a group. Still isn't bad though. I really like the LE ammo. I'm going to have to get me some more!! :D

Just finished installing the Lyman Globe 20 MJT on my CB. Have to wait till next week to see if it works... ;)
I bummed, VTDW took the pix down. :D :D
Ya'll be sure and check out the .35 Remington thread. I think the monkeyman or nauman have something up their sleeve. I sense chortling going on.

Man, the things I have to put up with. I sure wish that my Sheila dog was still around, I could just tell you that she ate it rather than face that mess!

No targets will be posted till Monday. Left for work and left my folder behind!
RD, By work, I assume that you mean driving one of those flying machines. So, whatdaya going to do all that time the A/P is handling the craft? :D :D
Back in the early 70's when returning from a mission, we would sometimes drop down to about 300' ("feet wet"),crack the canopy, CLOSE THE OXYGEN BOTTLES and fire up a Lucky. Helped to somewhat calm the tremors.
Best,
Dan

I do exactly the same thing, except it's ten hours of tax returns, an F-150 and a Marlboro. :)

Wouldn't the "girls" be the people who are obviously compensating for being anatomically "undergunned"? :D

Yep, you don't even want to see what that wind was doing to those little 300gr. 44cal bullets.
