www.grafs.com has a BSA 3-9x40 17 Mach 2 scope on sale for $45, which is a lot of scope for the money. The elevation target turret drum is calibrated for the 17 Mach 2. The reason I bought this scope is that I was looking for an inexpensive scope for my recently acquired Marlin 1894CL in 25-20.

In searching for a good handload I noticed that the Speer 75 grain FP could be driven to 2100 fps. 2100 fps sounded familular and, upon further investigation, I determinde that the factory loaded velocity of several cartridges was 1900-2100 fps. As long as the ballistic coefficient of their respective bullets is .110 to .135, the trajectory is almost identical.

For example, with a 100 yd zero:

17 Mach 2: 17 gr. V-Max bullet, 2100 fps, BC .125, -4.31"@150 yds., -13.70" @ 200 yds.

5mm Rem RF Mag: 38 gr. Core-Lokt bullet, 2100 fps, BC .135, -4.00@150, -12.40@200.

22 Win Mag: 35 gr bullet, 2100 fps, BC .120, -4.30@150, -13.50@200.

25-20 Win. (handload): 75 gr Speer FP bullet, BC .133, -4.14@150, -13.09@200.

30 Carbine: 110 gr. RN bullet, 1990 fps, BC ??, -4.50@150, -13.50@200.

35 Remington: 200 gr. RN bullet, 2020 fps, BC ??, -4.1@150, -12.5@200.

45-70 Gov't: 300 gr bullet, 1900 fps, BC ??, -4.3@150, -12.90@200.

The bottom line is the BSA 3-9x40 17 Mach 2 scope can be used on rifles chambered in several other calibers with excellent results. Just zero the rifle at 100 yards then simply dial in target range, up to 300 yards.

This scope also comes with aluminum screw-in lense covers. The scope that I received is everything that BSA said that it is. Optics are suprisingly clear and bright.

Just thought maybe someone else would find this interesting. If this scope works out after a session at the range, I plan on ordering two more; one for a 5mm Rem RF Mag and one for an H&R 22 Win Mag semi-auto.
