. . . proper use of a sling to stabilize the rifle in the basic field shooting positions. . .

You didn't say what your purpose was? Assuming it is for field use, check Jeff Cooper's book, Art of the Rifle. For match shooting with traditional military style slings, take a look at Jim Owens's book, "Leather Sling and Shooting Positions", down a ways on this page (http://www.jarheadtop.com/books.html).

Mine is a simple monolithic Hunter brand 1" wide leather sling, no partitions, no adjustments, and very stable. It goes under the elbow, over the forearm, and I take up any slack with my fore hand when the sling is in line with the forestock.

Owen's books, the 4 in the series, will tell you just about everything you neew to know to improve yourself at the range. Most of the tecniques discussed within them can be transposed to the hunter's field.
When I bought them about 5 years ago, the info and tecniques DRAMATICALLY improved my scores inthe national matches.
easy reading, great info!;)
