Can anyone please tell me what the minimum to maximum fine for killing a red tailed hawk?
My buddy has one on his property eating his chickens.
He was thinkin about killin it. I told him not to because its a pretty hefty fine but I was just wondering.
What the minimum and maximum fine for killing one of these birds. How much would he be penalized for killing it?
Thanks, guys. :)
I know it's illegal, maybe a Federal offense. Was he planning on turning himself in to the law after he shot it?
Raptors are federally protected. Best to leave it alone, or SSS!

Makarov ,
I am not sure what the penalty is for killing a red-tailed hawk. Of course you could always check the regulations book, state wildlife officer, etc. to see what you could do to determine if this would constitute a nuisance animal problem or not.
Do you have any idea what has been tried to keep the hawk out of the chicken yard? Owls, hawks, and other birds of prey can be quite problematic. We usually try hanging aluminum pie plates, soda/beer cans, and Mylar tape around the chicken yard. Let them flash and clank together as much as possible.
I have thought about getting some old fishing net and creating a canopy over the chicken yard. However I have not ever tried it because I figured I would end up catching a lot of the tweedy birds in the off chance I could catch the owl or hawk that was causing the actual problem.
Good luck with it.

They are covered by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and it is a federal offense.

You don't need a real net. Just tie some 30 pound mono fish line back and forth across the hen yard. After they crash and burn a few times they'll avoid the place.
We use it to keep the pelicans off our pier. They can't seem to see it and they take a wicked tumble when it snags them.

There is a procedure in place for relieving predation of livestock in most states. In Georgia, you go to your local game warden, explain the problem, and he will outline the procedure for you. I have used a legal procedure for eliminating Canadian honkers.
And then there is SSS. But I don't recommend it.

I heard the folks battling the wolves up north that are protected use the 3S method.
