View Full Version : Disposing old ammo?

After Dad passed away, I was left to go through his things. He was a big collector of guns and odd ammo. He also had a bad habit of stashing things in old coffee cans. In one of these was a pile of the old pin-fire shotgun shells. Most with the pin inserted. I see them as collectables but also very dangerous if one should get bumped or dropped. What is the best way to dispose of these? For now they're in a safe place, but if something happened to me, most people wouldn't know what they are or what those pins can cause.

I think I'd take them to a larger gun show and offer them to a cartridge collector as one lot. They should be worth a couple bucks each on average.
Shipping them might be dicey, but if you advertise on some auction sites, I'm sure there will be someone who knows how it can be done both legally and safely.
There's simply too much value there to just "dispose" of it - and trashing it would be a kind of dishonor to the man, I'd think. Better to pass it along to another admirer and collector, then use the proceeds in a way that your Dad would have enjoyed.
