Hey guys,
I have a question for those of you that shoot the weatherby
magnums. After going through various loading books and
manuals, I have found that most weatherby loads use the
federal 215 primer. I only use CCI brand primers for all of
my loads, just because they are the easiest to find. Would
CCI 250 primer work just as well as the fed. 215?
thanks

The only thing I find with primers is that if I want to push the limits in a bolt action rifle I will use the CCI primers as they are heavier and don't flatten and flow back into the firing pin hole quite as much. That being said I havn't used CCI in many years and don't push the limits anymore and don't find it necessary ... Chief

I believe I'm using the CCI 250s in the 300 wby with no problems.
Be sure use the same primer from the start. If switching from 215 to 250s I'd drp bakc to the start load and work up again.
good luck

I'd really have to look hard to tell any difference. FWIW, both brands function very well.

I prefer to use Rem or Fed Large Rifle Mag Primers in my 300wm and 06's for improved extruded powder ignition. I've hunted in some subzero temperatures in the late fall in Colorado and never have had a misfire. The men I hunted with always used mag primers in their big game rifles.

ChiefI've tested the limits once on a Martini Cadet & a Rem 788 on the advice of a fellow club member using CCI primers. They not only flowed back from the powder charge they also cratered & when I was able to open the actions the primers fell out of the primer pocket .I never took Dirty Bob's load advise again but he always offered some outlandish load 4 or 5 grains above any published load.Club members always wondered how many rifles, shotguns, and handguns he grenaded.

Federal 215 Gold Match primers are my choice for all magnum loads in several cartridges. Second choice is the Winchester primer, which, I'm told is actually hotter than the others. I seldom use CCI primers due to variations in the cup hardness and thickness. I do use the preloaded primer strips from CCI when loading some revolver cartridges, just for the convenience. However, if it weren't for CCI, primers would be a lot more expensive. Time was, only Winchester and Remington primers were available. and CCI came along keeping the price down.

I've had very good results with the CCI 250 in largish cases and slow powders. Have not cratered any or blown any yet even pushing things in the Ruger #1 trying to make that 300 grain boattail go a bit faster.
