I don't know about your older rifle, but my newer 39A is a bit finicky about the ammo. Some ammo (usually cheaper varieties) will jam quite a bit while feeding from the magazine. Usually higher quality ammo will shoot without a problem. Try some Federal Spitfires or Winchester Super-X .22's and see if the problem goes away.

If your rifle is jamming during the loading phase, you should check the guide spring. It is an almost flat spring just above the entrance to the chamber. It is held in place by a screw on top of the receiver. It's function is to guide the cartridge into the chamber smoothly. If it is missing or not properly positioned the nose of the cartridge will jam against the top of the receiver.
