I was looking at an AR-10 today I almost brought it home. Anyway I am very framiliar with AR-15's and I have a Marlin 1895G, AR-15, and a remington 870 I have been looking into getting a bolt action gun is something like 30-06 I was realy wanting a .300 magnum but the more and more I think about it the .30-06 would be more practical. But that AR-10 that I checked out was realy cool so I am concidering geting an one insted of the bolt gun next. How big of a critter could I hunt with a .308? What kind of accuracy and range could I expect with an AR-10? I have no intrest in shooting game that is further than 300 yards. I dont have the time to practice enough to feal like I can make a shot on a critter like that. I know that there is a bizillion factory loads and almost limitless handloading for it. Should I pass on getting a bolt gun and go with an AR-10? I will eventually get a light weight bolt gun either way but which should I get first?

Lots of deer, elk and black bear been downed with the 308 Winchester. It's very simular to the 30-06 as far as power and trajectory.
Folks are using the 308 for high power rifle competition and one of the course of fires is at 600 yards. The 308 does very well at these ranges.
As far as accuracy of the AR-10 real strides have been made in making the AR platform into some very accurate weapons. As short as 15 years ago I would never have recommended the AR platform as being an accurate weapon, but now were finding that many AR platforms are as accurate as many fine bolt guns and in some cases even more accurate. If you like the platform get one. I would expect to pay in the thousand dollar bracket and up to get a really accurate AR platform in 308.
As for what to get first your budget will determine that to begin with. You can expect to get an accurate bolt gun such as the Savage, Ruger or Remington for well under a thousand dollars where an accurate AR platform will probably exceed that.
I would sure recommend that you get a good accurate 22 rifle in the same type of action as your hunting rifle and practice with that a bunch. You can become very proficient with a rimfire and that proficiency will carry over to the big bore centerfire.

Whatever you do...don't ask Zumbo!
I've liked those 308 AR 10's. BUt, I bought a Saiga 308 instead. It's a cheap Russian rifle...actually an AK47 that's chambered in 308. So it's analagous to a 308 AR...but on the cheap.
I could hunt with it, but haven't yet. The barrel is short, so velocity is sacrificed. And I find I'm not as keen on hunting w/ a semi auto anymore, since it probably won't like a diet of my hot 308 loads.
Sure fun to plink w/ milsurp ammo! ANd it's a great camp rifle.
