I just purchased an Uberti 1873 rifle. I want to handload for the 44-40. There seems to be alittle more to this round when handloading. I noticed two different sizes for 44cal bullets. I did research that the Ubeti is a .429" bore so I figure I can us a .429" size bullet. Does anyone have any reloading data for shooting copper bullets (Hornady, Speer, Sierra, etc). I plan to use it for deer hunting. Any safe, proven data would be appreciated.

I think the Hornady data is still on line. When you pick a bullet you will be able to see. That .4295 size is available from Sierra. I think the hornady offerings are all .430.

You may want to ask your rifle manufacturer for a suggested bullet for deer hunting with that rifle.

Here are some .44-40 loads from "The Legacy of Lever Guns" magazine page 26, dated winter 2000. The article is "Winchester Model 1892" by Dave Scovill.

200 gr. Speer JHP (.429"):
2400 16.5 gr. 1325 fps*
IMR-4227 18.0 gr 1301 fps
Herco 10.0 gr. 1330 fps
Unique 9.0 gr. 1225 fps

From the Alliant Powder Reloader's Guide, 2000 edition

200 gr. Rem. SP (diameter unknown):
2400 14.5 gr. 1230 fps (maximum recommended load)

* WARNING: exceeds Alliant Powders maximum recommended load

You might want to consider using lead bullets as a lead bullet will fly just as true as jacketed, more easily obtainable, can be home cast, costs less, and will kill just as surely.

Please check your own reloading handbook to ascertain that these loads do NOT exceed the recommended maximum loads. I have only loaded the Unique load and know it does not exceed the recommended maximum load.

Hope this helps.
