Has anyone rechambered their 25-20 to 25-20 improved or .256 Winchester. Going the improved route makes more sense because factory ammo can be used. However, the .256 has a larger case capacity and operates at a greater maximum pressure, thereby allowing for a substantial incease in bullet velocity.

Why take a like-new Marlin 1894CL and adulterate it? For the same reason that you bore and stroke a 283 Chevy V8; more cubes.

On second thought, just talk me out of it and into just shooting it as-is.

Nitro,

If you're bored with your 1894CL.....you should seriously consider selling it to me.

Looked into the same situation 3 or 4 years ago and quickly decided Improved chambering was best route on a 25/20 94CL to avoid bolt face/feed mods. For a .256 Win Mag start with a .357 and simply rebarrel with a 25/20 Marlin barrel, then rechamber to 256 w/ no feed issues - what I planned, and bought both rifle and barrel for but just haven't gotten around to - yet!

That is what Greg Mushial did. He reported his results on the old Marlin board several years ago. His load data is up on his web site.

Scroll down to the lever-gun and click on the Oregon Trail data.
The Marlin barrel does fine as a .256WM. Greg used factory brass and I used formed .357 Magnum brass for the TC. Dont bother with nickle plated brass, best results come from regular brass.

For standard short range varminting I had better results with the standard .25-20 and it is my preference.

I kinda have this covered twice .

I have the 1894CL in 25-20 and if I want more I have a Marlin 1893 in 25-36 Marlin .

And on another alternative I have the 1894CL in 218 Bee and again if thats not enough I also have a Marlin 336SC in 219 Zipper .

I think if I were planning on making a 25-20 Imp. I'd get one of the present production 32-20's and rebarrel . As opposed to rechambering an existing 1894CL in 25-20 .

The 1894CL's from the late 80's and early 90's are starting to have a bit of collector appeal ;)

Slim,

Maybe I just missed it, but I looked at Greg's web site but didn't see any info on the 25-20 or the .256 Win Mag.

Sorry,

I gave you bad dieections. On the GMDR site scroll down to below the lever-action rifle. There are two links, one for Oregon Trail Data and one for additional data. Click on the additional data and it is on the left side of the page. Click on the bullet weight you want to look at.

Greg wrote the Oregon Trail data, shooting a pile of bullets in the process.
