Any suggestions on a nice steel buttplate? I'm looking around on Midway, Brownell's and a few other places and have found decent looking (unfinished is fine) ones from Allan Foundry, Treebone Carving, and another from Numrich that fits pre-'64 Winchester 70's. Any suggestions?

As well, if anyone has a pre-'64 model 70, could you tell me the buttplate dimensions?

Thanks

One note- I don't like the Neidner-style plates... its the ones like the old Winchester 70 that I like

I've used several from Brownell's. If you really want something neat look at the skeleton butt plates and grip caps at Brownell's. Once their inletted into a stock they are pretty beyond description. I usually checker the exposed wood on the butt plate.

hmm, if you really wanted to take on a project, you could pour one out of Cerrosafe, I read about doing a forend cap that way in one of the Gunsmith Kinks books. That is also the way they do them on the new Sharps rifles I believe

Have you seen any skeletonized buttplates that arent really expensive (only one i've seen is $150!) What tools do you think I would need to skeletonize a plate like this? http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?chrProductSKU=267620&chrSuperSKU=&MC=

Advantage of that is that they're only $4.80 apeice and thus I could practice and experiment some.
