--Making shotgun type stocks usually means having to drill a hole lengthwise through the stock for the thru-bolt. In the past I've drilled them by hand and also in the drill press useing a clamp type fixture and a center point. Has anyone tried making a setup for a lathe to do this? I'm thinking of a cradle set up that would have a center point on one end as a guide.

I made a jig for the drill press. I suppose you can do the same on a lathe provided you spin the bit and not the stock, the off-balance will likely sling it out unless you keep the RPM's way low.

Chuck the deep drill in the lathe headstock and a dead center in the tailstock. Be sure these are aligned on center. Leave the tailstock loose enough so that it can be pushed by hand. Mark the stock and center punch each end. Holding the stock in the left hand, set a center punch mark on the dead center and feed the tailstock forward with the right hand. Push forward for a short distance and retract to clear the chips. When the hole is about half way through, reverse the stock and drill from the other end. The tailstock is never tightened down. If the chips are not cleared frequently the drill will tend to wander. Done properly, the two holes will meet in the middle.

Two diameter holes can either be drilled with two different diameter drills, starting with the biggest diameter first, or can be cut with a fly cutter guided by the single diameter hole. The latter is the easiest.
