Hello
Due to a medical condition that I recently developed,I need a high comb and wide cheekpiece on my rifles with offset scopes.
These are the Krag and Winchester '94(older model).
I'm going to do the Krag first.
It has a cheekpiece that I had installed,so i bought an epoxy kit that the Hardware salesmsn said could be applied in Layers. That would allow me toget it in the configuration that I want in the 15 minute "work" time.I can build a "form"around the existing cheekpiece to hold the epoxy in place while it sets.Modeling clay will be used to contain the epoxy on the top of the comb.
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
I also discovered a website for Richards MIcrofit Gunstocks.
This company will supply Krag stocks at a starting price of 59.96 dollars, and for 13 dollars will allow a higher comb for my personal need. This would be 99% inletted, and with a but pad installed, and shipping would only cost 113 dollars. It sounds too good to be true.
Has anyone heard of this place?Has anyone done any business with them?
Thanks
Frank
Yeah, Frank -
Faucettb and I have been advocating Richards Microfit stocks for some time here on the board.
Don't think you'll be disappointed with their workmanship or supplied wood.

I've had very good luck with Richards stocks and have been using them for many years. As you said for a small additional charge they will leave extra wood anywhere on a stock.
For your model 94 I'm not sure where to look. Cabela's sells aftermarket stocks pretty reasonable if you happen to mess up the original.
One thing you can do is simply cut a flat place in your original stock and dowl and glue a piece large enough to make into the cheek piece you want. That may be an alternative to building up with epoxy

Faucett,Sanding a flat surface and installing two dowels,is the way that I installed the cheekpiece on the Krag.Because I have it already installed,I think that the easiest choice for me is to build on it.
The Win'94 is a different matter.I would like to keepthe origional stock, and buy an aftermarket one to fid out what skills ar still at my diposalI don't recall the date, but my last stock project was a Herter's;for a Enfield Jungle Carbine.
I decided to try the epoxy buildup, first.I can use it to experiment with the configuration that fits best. The cost is minimul, also.

Cabela's have replacement OEM looking stocks for both the early and late 94's. Sounds like your on the right track with what your doing.

Sir,
I have no experience with the products that you ask.
Is 15 miniutes enough for you?
A story: My son's BB gun would not shoot to POA. I drilled "spot welds" out and instucted my good wife to buy "JB weld at Wal-Mart.
Saturday morning came to regulate sights.
#1 set-up target
#2 set-up rifle
#3 had clamps, rubber bands, and other stuff "at ready".
#4 I mixed and applied "JB".(figured I had 15 minutes or so)?
#5 Read package( Is JB QUICK) I HAVE 4(four) minuetes  !
I made it work! Panic is hard on a person though.
I wish you the best!

Thanks,again,Guys
I have Cabellas catalogue;I'llcheck it out,later today
Cheezy;I like your idea,but I need a much bigger addition.The cheekpiece that I had installed,is 1/2 inch,and I added a 'stick on'pad that is 1/4 inch.The 3/4 inch unit is not quite adequate for me.

Hello,again
I decided to try building a cheekpiece with layers of epoxy.
It took 6 applications to get the desired general dimensions.
I'm now, sanding it into some semblance of "fit".
The epoxy is really hard.It takesa lot of sanding.

I don't know about using it on stocks, but I have a little 4.5 inch grinder/sander that spins about 10,000 rpm that I use when doing auto-bodies. when I'm doing something small I put the sander in a vice and move the workpiece against it. Don't know if that would work for you.

would a rasp be too rough? sometimes a coarse file and file cleaning brush works too

hello
I have a belt sander, but I don't trustmyself using it.I did use my vibro sander and Dremel tool with sanding attachment.
It came out pretty good.I assembled the rifle and dry fired it on the patio from a rest.Itt fits good;no neck strain,at al.
I'll finish sanding it with finer paperand try to include a picture with my nextpost.
I'm considering painting the entire stock. Is there paint available for gunstocks, other then "camo"?I would use household paint rather then go that route.

Both Brownell's and Midway have paints for gunstocks and guns. Lots of guys just use a good enamel from the local hardware stores. I've had good luck with Rustolium and it comes in a bunch of colors. flat black works well.

I used auto paint (dark blue metallic) on a stock I painted once, it came out pretty good

Today,I went to the hardware store, and iuquired about paint for a gunstock. He advised me that,in his opinion, porch and deck paint would be the most durable;even latex. He did say that oil based wiuld be more durable. Are the paints that yuou used oil based?
On the other front;I tried out the new configured stock at the Range yesterday. It did OK;one 100 yard group measured 1 inch.
However,I detected a little neck strain, and will build it up another 3/8ths or 1/2 inch. The addedbulk is needed at the top of the comb, not to the side,as much.
When ready,I'll try again,and report again,here.

I think porch or deck paint would feel really weird on a stock. I think the most durable stuff I've seen is a "chip guard" spraypaint for auto undercarriages. It's extremely difficult to even scratch and would leave a black matte finish that wouldn't look bad on a rifle.

Hello
I checkedMidway's catalog, and all the auto paints are applied with a pressure spray outfit.Have any of you used a common spraycan with satisfactory results?
Back to the origional subjest.I just finished the addition to the cheekpad. I'm sanding it now.

You can do good work with a spay can. Shake well and shake often. If you get a bad can, get rid of it and get another. That cheap plastic nozle is the key to a good spray pattern.
I wonder how spray-on truck bed liner would look/work for this?

Hello
I can finally give a report on this 'adventure'.
The comb is a full inch above the issue stock comb.It definately is NOT stylish, but does do the job.I get a full cheek 'kiss'on the stock.I never got this with a scope, even before the operation on my neck.
Heretofore,I would press my jaw againdst the stock, and it was uncomfortable after a number of rounds. Now,I feel that I could shoot all day long.
II have to reshape the new cheek pad,to make it a little less ugly.I'll ccut some off of the front and the back;away from my cheek contact spot,as well.

Sounds like your getting it fixed up the way you need it. When your finished you might want to include a pix of it. Are you going to paint for a finish?
I was down at the pawn shop last week and picked up a gun that had been stocked with one of the old Herters stocks. It was a high comb affair and really felt good. I'd forgotten how nice those old roll over cheek piece stocks were.

Faucette
My 30 Carbine has one of those stocks.I asked them to leave extra wood on so I could make a Mannlicher style stock
I had a steel tube Weaver scope on it for many years, but replaced it with a red dot sight when I needed it for hunting right after my operation.
It is the best 'fun gun' that I've ever owned.
I will post pictures of the 'new' Krag, but it will be a while.
I like the idea of common Rustolium paint.I'll paint the wood one color, and the metal another.

Frank - is this what is referred to as a "black rifle"? :D
Comb looks quite high, but what the heck - if it works for you, go for it!

Kragman,
It looks like you got the cheek pad where you needed it, now let's see how she shoots. Looks like the paint job worked out pretty good, I've beeen considering a paint job on one of my stocks that has a few inlaid peices of wood used to make repairs that look badly out of place. The guy I got it from had set a shoe polish can in the stock so he could carry his survival kit in it.

Yeah,it's the shootin' that counts. It will be a whole new "ballgame"with the new cheekpad and the firelapped barrel.
I bought some sorta light bullets;165 grain, plain base(I got them from a member here)I'm going to the big gunshow in Harrisburg,PA,next week, and hope to pick up some heavier cast bullets and some powder.I would appreciate any suggestions for something a little faster then IMR 4198.
I'm also sending the last picture(hopefully)
