I noticed that there is a pretty well balanced selection of .338 caliber bullets. On midwayusa. First off i do not have a .338 caliber gun so i realy have not paid much attention to .338 caliber bullets. I am thinking about eventually getting one. But what is the point in .338 caliber solids? A 250g .338 cailber bullet at over 3000 fps out of a .338-378 weatherby would seem quite devistateing. But what would you hunt with it? Brown Bear Polar Bear or Buffalo woud be the only thing I could think of in America. But I would think that something like a Barns Triple shok X bullet would be a better choice. Heavy enough construction to bust through bones and a little expansion to do some extra dammage. In Africa I dont know what you could hunt with it. Would It be legal for dangerous game hunting? But then you have to deal with takeing the chance of over pressure from the heat and you brass sticking in the chamber. I dont know it is is true but I hear that High pressure cartrages often have problems in Africa. Any way what is the point?

Lots of guys out here in the West like the big bore 338's for elk. If I didn't have an 8mm Rem mag in the closit one of Remingtons 338 Ultra-mags would be there.

I've had 8mm mags since they came out and it will shoot bullets up to 250 grains. My go to the woods load has been Sierra's 220 grain spitzer boat tail at 3080 fps.

It works good on elk and did a fine job in Alaska on the big bears and buffalo.

Most of the African hunting places for Dangerous game have cartridge size limitations. Some places allow you to shoot a 375 and some require an over 40 caliber. The idea behind solids is to make it past lots of bone on elephants and water buffalo.

If they exist in the marketplace - someone wants them, whether they need them or not.

It doesn't have anything to do with whether they are actually useful or not.

Shooting truck engines maybe?
