I just read that CMP has suspended orders for Garands for the time being. Are they out of em or just waiting for more surplus to come through?
Does this affect the carbine?

They are out. When I took their instructor's certification last year, they thought they had a 3 year supply remaining. The Garand matches and popularity of the program has been exploding. They expect to have more returned imports in October. No affect on Carbine supplies.

Thanks Nick, I'm 58 and hope I'll live long enough to get a decent one!

While the CMP is currently out of M1 Garands, the used gun market has a lot of them for sale. So it is incorrect to say there is a Garand shortage. If you want an M1 Garand, I would suggest shopping the used gun racks. True, prices have gone up, but so have a lot of other things. The M1 carbines have not yet been offered for sale by the CMP. Hope this helps. All the best...

. . . The M1 carbines have not yet been offered for sale by the CMP. . .
They will begin taking orders for Inland M1 carbines tomorrow (April 30th, 2007), and will have them in both stores by Thursday. $495.

This is so confusing. The CMP in a newsletter dated 4/28/07 states that orders for M1 carbines are now being accepted. All their other notices say April 30th. Would a two day delay in submitting an order put you out of the running for the initial M1 carbine offer?

probably not a problem, but the later orders will have longer processing times...

Correct. It's just a matter of backlogs of orders building up. The current dates are in the online store under Rifles (link below). Orders received ahead of time will be returned. They get a lot of people trying the "jump the gun" so to speak, and ditch to the head of the line. (That happens with match entries, too.) They also don't want to devote staff time to identifying and filing orders for an upcoming start date. They want to process them as they arrive to keep the paper pile as small as possible.
If you mailed your order on the 28th, it seems unlikely they would get it before the 30th, anyway, short of some sort of postal miracle. I don't believe they go by the postmark. The site simply says they won't process orders received before that date. If you faxed your order on that date, then you would have a problem. You can fax it again today, if you did.
