myself and 2 mates want to go for a hunt to get some pigs,
the only problem is, we dont really know where to go. can you suggest any good places to look for pigs. We are from the Taree area and about 1 days travel would be as far as we would want to go

Not from that area mate, but if I were in your shoes, I would be approaching property owners personally and negotiate shooting on their land. They will be able to tell you if they have a pig problem and what they expect behaviour/shooting wise.

Ive found that a friendly hello is the best way to start off. Being an SSAA member and a member of a local hunting group is usually a handy thing to have as well- makes you seem all the more responsible.

Do what I do, Make up a Flyer with all your details on it, Name, Address, Vehicle & Drivers & Shooters Licence details, SSAA details,Contact details and a little story about what you want.
I use the "responsible shooters seek access to land in this area" - Then go for a drive and drop it in mailboxes of Landholders (then just don't expect the farmers to ring you), go around again two weeks later and knock on doors, say hello and introduce yourself.
As a couple of farmers have said to me, "If your willing to provide all that kind of info you must be serious about what you say and your shooting"
I started doing this 30 years ago and it still works for me and now my three boys
So far I have open welcome to over 6000 acres of land at various locations - Now the farmers do ring me when they have a problem with bunnies, foxes, pigs, roos etc because they have learnt that I am a Responsible shooter, only shoot what they want, use the firearms that they permit, leave the gates as I found them, spot their sick or injured animals, only take additional shooters they permit ( provide details for them also) AND ALWAYS ( without fail) ring them before I step foot on their land each time

Stoffa, very good ideas there, except for the drivers license number part. Too many ways for that information to find its way into the hands of identification thieves.
but gun club info would sure be good. We have alot of crop land here, and the deer are really doing a number on it. I am still working on a long range rifle for clearing the deer out for the farmers here.
Some will talk with you and some won't, seems everybody has been burnt a time or two, and is skiddish about letting strangers on their land.

I still hand over my drivers details, farmers aren't interested in
identity fraud, they want to know who I am and the more details I give them the better, I want them to know that they have ALL my details so that if there is any questions to be asked or they want to track me down they can, They get my mobile number and my home phone and address also.
I have had phone calls from the Local Police who the farmers have approached to check out my details and the response from the Police was also "you must be serious about your shooting to supply these details. I am completely legal in all respects.
I have nothing to hide from the farmers I approach and I have to trust them, after all I am asking them to trust me with their livelihood and stock. I was born and raised on a farm but now live in the city so I understand their need to know who it is that they are going to trust to have wandering over their land.
I first use a flyer, thats what gets dropped in the mailbox on the first run and indicates that I want to shoot in their area and then when I approach them face to face, maybe a week or so later I hand over all the details, I don't hand them over UNTIL I know I'm talking to the landowner.

The flyer reads " MATURE RESPONSIBLE SHOOTERS REQUEST PERMISSION FOR ACCESS TO LAND IN THIS AREA FOR RECREATIONAL SHOOTING OF RABBITS, FOXES ETC.

ALL ARE MARRIED WITH FAMILIES AND WE WOULD LIKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVE TO YOU , THE LANDOWNER , THAT ALL SHOOTERS ARE NOT ALL “RATBAGS

ALL RULES OF THE OWNER WILL BE OBEYED, WE WOULD ONLY GO WHERE DIRECTED, WE WILL LEAVE YOUR LAND AS WE FOUND IT, UNLITTERED, UNMARKED , GATES OPEN / CLOSED AS FOUND AND NEVER WOULD WE ENTER YOUR LAND WITHOUT YOUR EXPRESS PERMISSION WHICH WOULD BE ARRANGED IN ADVANCE BY TELEPHONE PRIOR TO EACH VISIT.

WE WILL USE ONLY THOSE FIREARMS THAT YOU PERMIT, SHOTGUN, .22 OR CENTREFIRE.

WE HOPE THAT WE CAN HELP YOU DEAL WITH ANY PEST ANIMAL PROBLEM YOU HAVE .
