View Full Version : How old is brass w/o a headstamp?
Well, not exactly without any headstamp, but with nothing but "30-30" on it. There's no manufacturer name, no symbol, nothing. Just 30-30. There are only a few pieces in the lot I picked up, but I'm curious. Any ideas?

No way to know. Even if somebody knows of cases made that way, there is nothing to say for certain yours isn't from a different batch custom headstamped for someone else at some other time and place. I would just pitch them in case they are old enough to have been fired with mercuric primers. The residue from such primers weakens brass over time.
Works for me; thanks unclenick.

One time in AZ I found an old cartridge with no headstamp. It took me a bit to find out what it was for sure. It was an old, inside. primed 45-70. I sure wish that old cartridge could talk and tell me if it was a shot at an Apache or a deer.

The only cartridges that I''ve ever seen were those old 45/70 's.
They did'nt put a headstamp on them until March 1877.
I do know that the Russians put no markings on some of theie best target ammo because it affected accuracy.
