i'm was a history major in college and i start boot camp in about a month so this is my first rifle project i picked it up from a big 5, i was wondering if anyone knows how i can decode the serial number possible find out more about when/where the gun was made etc.

Not likely. They were made both in Belgium and Yugoslavia starting around 1924 (the 24 in the name), then all rebuilt post WWII (thus the 47).
You can pull the action out of the stock. If it has crown proofmarks anywhere, I'd suspect it to be Belgium made.
There were a number of different factories that did the refurbs, hence the writing on the left side of the receiver.
Just enjoy it.

Mike gave good advice. A number of 24/47s were reworks from Czech VZ24s that were captured. I have a few 24/47s that still show BRNO markings. All the best...

Would like to see pictures of those.... thought the reworked vz24s were marked as 24-52C? Or something like that....
