View Full Version : Peep Sight for Marlin 1895
The rear sight on my 1895 GS has broken and rather than calling Marlin again, I am going to install a peep sight. Looking for opinions on the best sight for the money. My Marlin is not drilled for a side mounted peep, if they ever were.
Thanks
Andy
P.S. The bottom part of the notched peice, that rides on the elevator slide broke off.

I put a Williams Fool Proof on my 1895G when I bought it. Back then, they were all drilled/tapped for this. I like it alright, but if I had to do it over again I think I'd get one of the XS ghost ring set- ups. Search "XS sights" I guess. Plus Cabela's 2007 Shooting Catalog shows them. At 55, I'm seriously looking at their rail for forward mounting scopes. I'm sure there will be others following up who have the XS sights. Good Luck
I thank you for your advise, and I know that a lot of other people love the XS sights, but they are pretty pricey, no? I just wanted an easy to use and mount sight, I dont think I need the added durability of the XS system.

Here is another option,

Just tell Tim what you want, and he'll build it for you... :)

I have a Williams top mount peep sight on my 1895 (standard model) and like it a lot. It is a good sight, at least for me. I have tried the XS peep and personally don't see (pun intended) what is so great about them. I prefer the Williams.
I do have an XS "scout" scope mount on my rifle with a Leupold 2.5x scope in QD rings, and that is one OUTSTANDING combination. The peep sight is backup, and I use it as much as I use the scope at the range, and I will occasionally take the scope off in the field for short shots.
if your reciever is grooved for a scope you might consider a beeman sport aperture sight with finger adjust knobs...... i have one for my air rifles but i don't see why it wouldn't work for ya.... it says beeman on it but i'm pretty sure williams made it.... also you could look at what brownell's has in their catalog.........

Marble tang mounted peep sight.

On a .45-70?????
I'd be a little concerned about getting an eye poked out....
On any 1895 except the Cowboy, the serial number is on top of the Tang, so you cannot mount a sight there without moving the serial number and that requires permission from the ATF.

P.S. Midway is running a sale on the WGRS sights for 30.00. How do you feel about them?

The Lyman mounting base is designed to mount the tang sight without damaging the serial#. The skinner sight is another alternative for a reciever mounted peep. It fits on the two back scope base holes and is designed much like the XS ghost rings. I had to get ahigher front sight for my Marlin.
Horseman, I stand corrected (and humbled :-) )
Thank You all for your advice.
