I bought a sniper scope mount for a 91/ 30 Nagant. It is made of aluminum . Is this correct? I feel it should be of steel. htshot

Folks been making scope mounts out of aluminum for lots of years, Weaver being one of the most popular. They've been putting them on rifle for more than 40 years now with no problems. I've got several rifles with aluminum bases and rings in the safe that shoot fine.

Have one of those on a M38 Roosian POS. Seems to work OK in the "scout" type mount. My 91/30 has the receiver d/t'd, the bolt altered with the replacement bolt-on bolt handle. This seems to work OK, too. Both are aluminum.

They were originally steel and some currently available are aluminum. Because of the high mounting of the scope above the rifle some of these mounts have failed from recoil. Usually it is the base that mounts to the receivers side and it tends to fracture through the rear screw mounting hole. Do a search on either gunboards--sniper forum or one of the 7.62x54r or Mosin Nagant forums for more information.

There are a lot of cheap original designed but poorly produced scope mounts out there and all original were machined billet steel.

I have been mounting PU scope mounts on 91/30, ex-snipers (a real pain) and lately Finn M39's and the tolerance vary a lot from all manufacturers requiring fixtureing and individual hole setup/drill/tapping.

Beware of the cast/machined/polished ones as I have seen a few broken ones (Vertical adjustment ears and large screw end) broken from overtightening or casting porosity.

I bought three on Ebay from Hetman and the were fine and of original quality, also got some good one from a DJ Fiesta (both out of the Ukraine) but DJ Fiesta he had some trouble and did not meet commitments.

I cannot handle the limited adjustment/accuracy of the 3.5x PU scope so decided to start building my own out of billet Alum.
