The rear sight wedge in my Marlin is a little loose in the dovetail. I'm wondering if there is a way to tighten it a bit and still be able to tap it left or right for windage. Maybe low strength Locktite or Permatex in the dovetail ? Any thoughts , advice, suggestions appreciated.

Feel the need to change windage often?

Most hunting guns use one good load, so once the windage is set once, tends to stay there for a few decades.

When we are playing with iwdely different loads, will get the urge to change windage (as it's not uncommon for differnt loads to show not just elevation differences, but windage differences too).

So the dovetail gets loose.

Can:
1. Glue/Locktite it in place.
2. Remove sight, peen the edges of the dovetail lightly to tighten it up.
3. Remove sight, pick punch a few riased burrs in the bottom flat of the dovetail to tighten it up.
4. Remove sight and soldier on a thin shim to the bottom of the sight.
5. Remove sight. Drill and tap the sight's dovetail base for a set screw.
6. Remove sight and replace it with a differnt open desgin with some windage adjustment.

OF the choices, only #5 and #6 would be useful if you intend to change windage after it's been set....all of the others would just get loose again if the doevtail was driven back and forth in its slot.

#2 and #3 are visually unappealing (althouhg #3 is totally hidden) and a slip of the punch can mar the barrel badly...and if some one ham-handed tried #3, they could damage the barrel past redemtion.

#4 is a good way to get sights to fit odd sized dovetails. Will runa cross some taht are of some odd size, or have been worn very large, and that repair can keep everything looking original...but it's a lot of work.

I wouldn't want to glue it in place permanently. Is there a Locktite that would still allow me to make adjustments if necessary? I wouldn't mind if it eventually loosened up again as I could just re Locktite it.
Thanks for the help.

Done many times in the shop I worked in. Like ribbonstone's #2. Remove the sight, peen one or both of the top edge's of the dovetail notch in the barrel slightly. I would not use any adhesives on the sight. It would be best if you fix the issue, not put a bandaid on it. Plus, this fix is free.

I must agree with ribbonstone & Gismo The best way is with a light peening, it doesnt take much to tighten the sight, just a few light taps.

I'm going with #2 also, if done properly the peening is virtualy undetectable.
Use a flat punch, a DULL chisel will make a nice flat peen, and will hold the sight in the dovetail nicely.
