Howdy guys just signing up to ask a question about the M48. I'm thinking of buying an M48 from Mitchell’s Mausers. I was wondering how big of a pain it is to mount a modern scope using modern mounts and rings. I'm gonna be using it at the range and maybe enter some contests and see how i do.
What kind of groups are being gotten with these rifles? What steps can i take to make the rifle more accurate?
Thanx guys!
You can go with either a "no gunsmithing" scope mount from B-Square or S&K, or you can take it to a gunsmith and have the receiver drilled & tapped for a standard scope mounting. The cost will be almost the same, either way you go.
A stock military rifle normally doesn't have the accuracy needed to win competitive matches. They were made for battlefield conditions and were considered acceptable with ability to group within 4" at 100 yds (4 MOA - Minute of Angle). With extensive rework (new stock, glass bedding, free-floating of barrel, replacement adjustable trigger, recrowning, etc.) they can generally be made into what one would consider acceptable target shooters.
As another member answered in your other post on this rifle purchase issue, you'd most probably be better off spending a like amount of money on a new factory commercial rifle that is already set up for scope mounting and go with that.

Viking, you may want to rethink your K98. A Swiss K31 or Swede M38 would be a better choice. The K31 is much easier to scope and is a very accurate rifle. St. Marie makes a side mount that requires no alterations to the rifle, that way it does not loose any collectors value. Any modified Military rifle will loose its value if modified. Here is a pick of my K31 with St. Marie mount. It can be taken off and put back on w/ no loss of Zero. http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j154/jpattersonnh/IM000268.jpg

Don't buy from Mitchell's. They sell everything at 2 or 3x the cost.
M48s are neat guns.... same problems inherent in scoping any military mauser, though.
Hit some gun shows and shops and see what you can find.

Ditto to what the others say about Mitchells. Mitchells won't even kiss you afterward.
Mausers don't lend them selves to scope mounting with out 1, turning down the bolt, 2, installing a low scope saftey, and 3, drilling and tapping the reciever.
Assuming you can't do those things yourself, the money spent will generally buy a nice used sporting rifle (Savage 110s run about $250 in my area) . I would suggest either using a scout type mount and handgun scope, or learn to use iron sights, if you want a milsurp shooter. You might be amazed at how well irons will work when a shooter knows how to use them.

I got a peep replacement for the Mauser tangent rear sight and I can ring the 200 yard gong with my 308 Columbian Mauser.

I forgot about MoJo sights! A better choice than scopeing.

M-48s, M24/47s are $130-$175 dollars depending on where you look. Mitchell's will gouge you for that x3 for the same rifle.
I'd look into the non-gunsmith type mounts. They just look more appropriate to me on these rifles. That and you can remove them and go back to unmodified is a nice option to have.
JP put me onto Allan's Armory and these guys and they are worth looking at.

I've got a Yugo M24/47 and it is a good shooter but my Swede M38 will out shoot it easily even with its mushy trigger. Gotta replace it.

Allan is a great guy, I talk to him once a month to see what toys he is looking into. You can also sign up for e-mail updates. He will give you info on new items before they hit the site. BTW Mike, Allan is a one man show! He personnally inspects and grades every rifle. His Husqvarna sporting rifles are superb, It almost makes me think of selling my military bolts. I and my oldest son now have 4 of his Swedes. Jim

If you want to see what you can do to a M48, go to:

There you can get good info on aftermarket accessories and detailed plans on how to customize the rifle. Look on the right sidebar.
