View Full Version : Favorite hunting vehicle
Don't know if any of you'll have a favorite hunting vehicle but here is mine.
I picked up this old jeep about 15 years ago for very little $$$
It used to be orange.
Every year, I think how much I'd like to have one of those new Kawasaki Mules, but then I go out to see if the old jeep will start again.
It starts, and I'm good for another hunting season. I think when the old jeep finally gives out, so will I.

I suppose it would have to be one of these two:

This is 40-Mile Air's 185 on floats. Good outfit...
Here's the other, my own stealthy mode of transport:
Don't EVER get rid of the Jeep, Tom! Think that passenger's seat is about broken in to fit my buns by now. Just hate to break in something new!
Check your PM's.

All of the above look purdy functional to me. Keep the Jeep. "King of the hill" to my mind.
I had a 1971 Volkswagon van at one time that did alot of huntin'. It did surprisingly well off-road(good ground clearence/ geared low). The sliding side door worked well for the dogs and it could hold lots of stuff. I don't remember the gas milage number anymore, but I know it was cheap to run.
I would camp/park on a downhill grade and sleep in the back with the dogs. Radio on all night. Battery dead by morning.
No worry. Make coffee, feed dogs and self. "Bump start every time by coasting the hill :D !
I think you folks have chosen good transport.

CheezywanI remember those old VW Vans. They were great transportation. Our church had one growing up and the whole basketball team fit inside.
Do you remember a VW creation they brought out about that time called the "Thing"?
It looked like an army vehicle but would have been a great hunting vehicle.
I think of all the vehicles I've hunted out of, the worst was one of the early Hum-Vee's that a lease ranch had. There was no interior room and the windows were too small.
Hum Vee may have changed that by now.
Down here, the best of the best is one of the old F350 crew cab Ford trucks. Everyone gets a window to hang a gun out of, and there's plenty of room for dead animals in the back and ice chests full of "Tea" with country music playing on the radio. The UGLY AMERICAN HUNTER !
There is something very nostalgic ( how about that word?)
about each hunting season. I do enjoy it much more in that ol jeep just because of all the memories.

338, you've got to cover a little more territory then us down here. I like it.

I don't know about the amount of territory, but nature of it (no roads or trails, rivers, bogs, glaciers, mountains) make airtravel or water travel a near must...

Is that the one that they made different grilles, fenders, and stuff for? So that you could change the appearence of the vehical?
I do remember the name. I'm just not sure of the details of the vehical.

Don't know. It was real boxy, but had the old carmen ghia engine. I'll post a pic. The ranch owner has one in his barn
Believe you're right, Tom -
As I recall, most folks called it "The Thing".

Sure wish I had one of those things.
Just got back from the hunting lease and finished the roof over the shooting bench.
It was very hot and humid. Not a good day to work outside but it is finished.
I found out that those steel frame 4'X4' real estate signs make great permenant target holders. I don't know how they end up in the back of my truck.

Tried to answer your PM, but got the board message your PM inbox is full and needs to be emptied before you can get anymore. Use the "delete" on the right side of the message box. Otherwise, I'll send an email.

Don't know about the VW vans, but an old beatup VW bug does surprisingly well in southern mud bogs. Light weight allows it skim the surface and of course easy on the gas and small enough to take some pretty tight spots.
Alyeska, everytime I see another photo from Alaska it only increases my desire to get up there. Maybe I can catch a rotational position up that way some day. They're still drilling wells up there aren't they?
