I'm new to this forum, I've been shooting and have been around rifles all my 22 years, recently I just purchased a K98/7.92 fmj (Russian captured) and I was wondering if anybody knew of a place i could find out what the ballistics are. I went and shot it at 25 yards and it was shooting about 2 inches high, I tried 100 yards and it shot over the target. the sight was not moved at all when I shot it from 25 and 100. I then went back to 25 yrds and raised the sight to# 2 and it actually raised the rounds to about 5 inches high. So i guess what i'm asking is the rifle already zeroed in at 200yds?
If anybody has experience with the kar98 please let me know thanks.

All I know is that I believe the first notch is set for 100 meters, not yards. Also all Mauser are known for fussy sights. They are hard to use compared to peep sights or larger front/rear sight combination like the Mosins.
Also, welcome aboard!

As kdud said in your locked post they are set for 300 meters. Now you can use a +3.50 front sight blade available for the Swede 96. They do fit and will bring you close to dead on at 100 meters. It is also a thin blade as opposed to the inverted V, so it is easier to sight targets. Sarco has them, $13.50 I believe. All the best, Jim

Welcome to the Forum.
Mauser 98 sights vary greatly. Some of my Mausers are nearly at point of aim at 100 yards at the lowest sight setting. Others are a foot high. The higher front sight blades work well if required. Take care...

Of course mine is a Turk Mauser and is dead on at 100+ yards at first notch. I wasn't aware that 98 were sighted at a standard 300 meters.

They're all different, and to try to generally explain Mauser sights, when they have been made around the world, for who knows how many different bullet loadings, is probably pointless.
MOSTLY they seem to shoot high. Mostly. Once in a while low, and quite often left or right.
Keep in mind the surplus rifles dumped on the market in this country may not have been carefully sighted in, before they were poured in a shipping container and sent over here.
About the best thing you can do, is get some replacement front sights from Brownell's that are taller, and file them to fit. It will save a lot of aggravation in the long run.
Best of luck.
