I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this post, but I'll put it here and the mods can move it if it isn't.

Anyway, two grizzly stories to report. The first is about a man from my town of Lander who went to Jackson Lake for an educational conference and was attacked while on an early morning walk just yards from some of the cabins located there. He was actually on his way back and surprised a mother bear with 3 yearling cubs who had just killed an elk calf after he had walked by on his way out. Some other guest heard his yells and started yelling at the bears, who then left without hurting the guy too bad.

This is the third grizzly attack in NW Wyoming/eastern Idaho this spring that I know of. Also, an 18 year old man was killed a few days ago in Utah by a black bear.

The other story involves a deputy sherrif from Pinedale who shot what he thought was a black bear over a bait near in area called Big Sandy on west side of the southern Wind River Mountains. This area had no previous documented cases of grizzly sightings since the 1800's. When his buddies and he took it to the Game and Fish bear guy, he immediately identified it as a grizzly bear. The bear was a 3 year old male in terrible condition, which reportedly contributed to the misidentification by the hunter. Because the hunter didn't try to hide anything, he will most likely receive a fine, but no big time penalties. Coincidentally, grizzlies in our state were recently removed from the endangered species list, and are listed as a trophy game animal in Wyoming, hence the reduced consequence. If he had done the same thing last year, he would be in much bigger trouble. The area where the bear was shot is just a short day's walk for a hungry bear from where I hunt elk. Hmmmm.....

I'm planning a family camping trip to the Big Horns the last week of July & first week of August. Do I need to bring a firearm? I only have 1 handgun, a Ruger mark 2 .22. I don't think it would be much protection against a bear. If I kill a bear in self defence will I be fined?Q

There are no grizzlies in the Big Horns. Those mountains are geographically separated from grizzly country by the Big Horn Basin. But black bears would be numerous. I've been thinking for the past few minutes and I cannot recall a bear incident recently in the Big Horn Mtns. You don't say whether you are camping in a tent, tent trailer, or a hard-sided camper. In the latter, you wouldn't need to worry about a bear sharing your sleeping bag with you. Really, I would only worry about a black bear at night, so you wouldn't want to leave any food out at night or during the day when no one is at camp.

I wouldn't bring the 22 for bear protection, but it would be kinda fun for plinking away from any campgrounds. You could bring a more powerfull shotgun or rifle to keep in camp, and take some pepper spray with you if you go hiking. Your chances of encountering a problem bear are minimal. I wouldn't let that chance dissaude you from taking your trip.

No, you won't be fined for killing a bear in self-defense.

I hope you have a great time! BTW my daughter will be in the Big Horns during that time on a 30 day backpacking trip through the National Outdoor Leadership School. Small world.

A fine would be the least of my worries!.....and if a .22 pistol is all that I had I would still take it with me. Life isn`t a spectator sport, especially when you or a loved one are getting mauled. You might be able/forced to get close enough to put a round through the ear or eye socket. Desperate situations require desperate measures.

Bear attacks do happen. I'd at least make sure that every member of the family was outfitted with pepper spray and know how to use it. Guns in the woods are not carried for a number of reasons, be it an area that is restricted or folks just don't know how to use them. But the pepper spray is usually legal everywhere and has a proven track record.

My second suggestion is do a little research on bear behavior. There's lots of info out there on how black bears behave in stressful situations, and suggestions on how to avoid those situations when confronted by a bear.

Hopefully any encounters with a bear will be a pleasant one, but being prepared sure wouldn't hurt anything.

I have camped around bears for years, in the backcountry of Wyoming, Montana, Tennesse and Alaska. These trips were backpacking excursions with other guys and no one carried guns. Now that I am taking my family to the mountains with me I think a gun might be a good idea. Thanks for everyones input, my intention was not to steal your thread Gomerdog sorry.Q
