Yesterday I bought a Springfield XD-45 ACP and took it to the range today. I've been looking at getting one for a long time and they have a good track record. For a DAO, it has a good, consistent trigger and it is accurate when I do my part. I put 140 rounds through it and it was great.
Having said that, while looking it over at the gunshop, I was sorely tempted to get the Smith & Wesson M&P 45. Does anyone here have the M&P and care to share your comments about it? It has some great features: blackened stainless slide, great grip and an overall beveled/smoothened profile. The take-down lever and slide-locking levers are both recessed and flush whereas the XD's are prominant. I suspect it would be more comfortable than the XD for concealed carry. My main hesitation in getting it was it simply hasn't been out that long to uncover any bugs.

I have an XD in 9MM and love it.

does it have an external extractor? most s&w pistols do. I have heard that external extr are not as reliable as internal ones but don't know why other than it looking uglier.

Send your XD here

You will love the grip and trigger work. I brought a XD for off duty carry because the Glock 21 always felt like a brick

Good morning!
Before you do anything to that Xd, i'd recommend that you shoot it for at least six months.
I have owned the XD-9 since they were intro'd to us by Springfield. mine was one of the first sold, and yes, it had the rust problem. [I.E. you could look at it and it would rust. It had a poor finish, as some of their guns did in the beginning. i remedied it with $70.00 of hardchrome on the slide!]
Since then the finish issue has been corrected, and these guns are about as reliable as they come. I am up to about 8500 rounds, and have NEVER had a failure of any type with this pistol.
Shoot it, and then shoot it more. get used to it, and how it performs.
If I can answer any questions on the XD, feel free to ask, but I have a sneaking suspision you'll really get hooked on it's performance.

Jeff Quinn just published a test of the S&W MP45 in GunBlast online magazine http://www.gunblast.com/SW-MP45.htm . He really liked it.
Here's a link to one of Jeff's articles on the XD45 from a few months back http://www.gunblast.com/Springfield-XD45.htm .

I don't have a MP 45 but do have a fullsized MP 40 and a MP 9mm compact. Love them both. I've heard nothing but good things about the MP 45.
Get 1st hand testimonials on all MP's by going to http://mp-pistol.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=5617&sid=5ca9267180421e69700e3afc53fe4407 .
The MP's have only been on the market for about a year and a half but have a very fast growing fan base.

owned an xd40 and got rid of it. nothing realy wrong with the gun other than the finish was poor and holster wear appeared very quickly.
Seemed to have a high bore axis and recoiled a bit more pronounced. For me the trigger reach just seemed short--wish it had a longer trigger reach which seems odd but is the only way i can describe it. Gun was flawless in operation and accuracy was acceptable.
I've only got to borrow a mp 40 once and thought the recoil was more acceptable than the xd. Lower bore axis it appeared to have. Accuracy was good. Trigger was "strange" to me and more expermintation is in order.
But then again you are looking at 45's.
Glad you're pleased with the XD .45 trigger. I'm used to single action and the travel, creep, etc. of the double action (at least on my XD) has been disconcerning to the point that I've sent it into Springfield's Custom Shop for the $195 action rework, plus the $95 fitting the barrel improvements.
I did find that fire lapping the XD helped the accuracy significantly and overall am pleased with the pistol. And my trigger concerns may not be fair as the XD trigger performs as well as my Taurus P24/7 action.
It will be interesting to see the Custom Shop rework makes much difference. Addmittedly, my XD shooting is slow fire and
I realize the XD isn't intended to be a Bullseye target pistol.
I suspect I would not notice the trigger nearly as much if I was doing combat / action practice.

You see now, I have had the opposite experience. while the trigger out of the box is "not great", the accuracy out of my XD9 has been phenominal! It shoots as tight as my "worked" Yost hi-power, and as stated in a earlier post, has yet to hiccup, even after many thousand rounds!
