I'm a reloader and a very careful one, but I still messed up somehow and apparently double charged a 20 gauge load. My son said it felt like a 10 gauge and was considerably louder than normal. My problem is how to extract the empty. The gun is not completely tight but the rotary bolt isn't turning at all. We can't remove the barrel (Bolt not released), can't tap the shell back with a cleaning rod. Seemed as though it went a tiny bit, then no more. I took out the trigger group. No help. The gun isn't worth a great deal, but I'd like to fix it. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Nevermind, I got it out. Good as new. We just used it for a round of sporting clays, works fine.

I can't help but ask, What might have been done to the barrel when this double charged load went off?
When a Proof Charge is fired I believe the barrel is xrayed to be certain there is no damage. What happened to that chamber/forcing cone that you can't see? Will it fail someday with a heavy load? I'd want to know if I had it in front of my lovely face!

Good point, and I wondered about that myself. Once we FINALLY figured out a good safe way to get it open. (A very small brass punch very carefully placed and tapped to rotate the bolt the rest of the way open) We found it wasn't as bad as I first thought and likely not a full double charge (we'll never know now, Progressive loader) I completely disassembled the bolt to check everything. Looked very good, infact like new. Then cleaned and examined the barrel. Same like new look, no damage to the lugs at all. No I didn't, and can't x-ray it. Finally we looked at the shell case for clues. It was not a "keeper " of course. A small deformation from the extracter. Some flattening of the primer. The case and the way the bolt turned so nicely with a little tap actually made me think the load wasn't as bad as we first thought, Thus my confidence in using it. I appreciate your comment. Jimmer.

My son+ your description of events= a trip to the factory or a real gunsmith for evaluation.

For saftey reasons, you NEED to know what happened?

It would be best to stand back and evaluate this event in my opinion.

Yes, I think your right. Who is good with this sort of thing in Wisconsin? I can drive to them. If nobody local will do it, isn't winchester out of business? I am really not to fond of sending a gun off to someone I don't know. If I just bought a new barrel for it, would all the concerns be taken care of? That may be the most practical alternative.

This gun came home with only one mission. To be a cheap light slug gun with a scope. My son loves it though and keeps pulling off my scope and shooting clays. His BPS 12ga is a way nicer gun but he still enjoys the 1300. We are both gravitating to lighter guns. A 410 Huglu sxs followed me home two weeks ago, a Beretta 28 ga is close behind. Must be the bread crumbs.

If I don't find a good smith, would getting a rifled barrel and junking this one sound sensible? We have several other shotguns to play with anyway.

I still have the shell case and will keep it until this is settled. Maybe longer as a reminder of what can happen.

My reluctance to spend a lot should be clairified. I only paid $150.00 for the thing. It came with four matching nasty scracthes on the reciever. Anything more costly than that and I'd junk it.

You guys are more objective than I have been, vote your choice

1 Gunsmith for less than $150.00

2 new barrel

3 junk

I don't think a smith would hit you all that hard for an evaluation. Alot of peace of mind to be gained. "If" he were to find a problem? Cost of repair would be your concern.

I hope your gun is fine. But I can't know that from here!

I dunno every so often some of the cities in the area do a gun buy back deal. One time they were giving out $200 grocery visa cards good at giant or something. Thats what I would do if I though that I had a gun that was a saftey hazard. At least when you send a bad gun to them you know that its gonna get melted rather than end up hurting someone else. personally when it comes to pumps there are only two that I personally like. One is the remington 870 the other is the Ithica 37.

Well I did find a smith to give me an opinion. It turns out he has seen this exact thing happen before. He thought it would be fine and if it were his, he would keep right on shooting it. Best part is since I just bought a new huglu 410 SxS from them, they didn't even charge me for the evaluation. Jimmer
