Any CHeetah shooters among us?

I used a finishing reamer on one of my Ruger M77 tang varmint .22-250 ...24" bbl

Fireformed .243 cases-
50 Nosler BT
46.5 gr. H414
Fed 210M
- and I was LGMF -

5 shot groups were .240 @100 yds typical. And that was shot from the top of my Oldsmobile !

I was going to build one a few months back and then found out the 308 BR cases that the cartridge was based on, were no longer available so stopped that project. Don't really know how much that really matters though, still should be a screamer.

The only real difference is that the .308 BR had small primer pockets instead of large. I'm not convinced it makes a difference.

Any version of the .308 necked to .224" is certainly a screamer. But you'll sacrifice a lot to get those last couple hundred feet per second; high barrel heat and short barrel life are right at the top of the costs.

Also keep in mind bullet failures at those extreme speeds and rotational speeds. Shooting bullets that don't make it to the target is just shooting blanks.

You know - I once had a 22-250 AI that I loaded up some very thin explosive varmit bullets in at the high end of the loading spectrum.

Still remember the thin streaks of grey vapor between the rifle and the 100 yd target. Nary a hole ever showed up in the target! :eek:

:D I'd never seen that happen myself until I started working with the 5-35SMc. Now I have tiny holes in my chronograph shield supports from bullets coming apart within inches of leaving the muzzle. Darn shame those 32-gr .20-cals won't handle a measly 4300 fps, ain't it? Have to back them down all the way to 4100. Geez... :rolleyes:

I had this one built in 1993 on a long action mod. 700 which then makes it possible to load the magazine for those fast follow-up shots on charging rockchucks :D …It has over a thousand rounds down the pipe and will still outshoot me…

Built the way Jim Carmichel had originally developed .22 CHeetah Mark I to be built…27” Douglass barrel, R-P .308 BR brass, 55gr. Bullets and a case full of H-4350… Using the 55gr. V-Max when the velocity gets much over 4200fps :eek: I start losing cases due to primer- pocket expansion…

Like kdub said bullet selection is critical, the CHeetah will vaporize blitzkings and other cheap .22s…I’m shooting only two now, the 55gr. V-Max and the 55gr. Sierra Gamekings..

Wildcatting is about pushing the envelope, have fun with your new toy ;) …

When I cut my Ruger's chamber, I started using .243 cases and it performed very well. I wasn't concerned about the difference in primer sizes, it was just a cool varmint rig project. I bought the tang safety ruger new at cost, it was my very first chamber job. And I was tickled to no end.

I sold that rifle to a fellow gunsmith, and I talked to him just the other day. He still has that rifle, says he pulls it out once in a while. I had put about 100 rounds thru it when I let it go.

And NO...HE absolutely will not let me buy it back !!!!! :mad:

Here is my CHeetah, built on a Remington 700 action with a rechambered 22-250 barrel that has been set back once. This rifle accounted for over 1000 coyote kills before I bought it from an acquaintance's estate. I added a vintage Weaver T-10 scope and it has been a great groundhog gun for me and has even added a couple of Indiana coyotes to it's record. I use 55 grain VMax loaded to about 4100fps in 308BR cases.

I have had several offers for it and haven't entertained any of them...lol. Both the 'smith who built it and the stockmaker have passed away and it is to me, irreplaceable. I did speak to the stock maker, Mike Cross, when I bought the rifle and understand he felt that piece of wood was "field grade"...nothing fancy...to me it is the best looking piece of wood I own by far.

I have a cheetah Mk II built on a 600 rem action with a Mcmillen stock. Its twisted to shoot 69-75 gr. pills. So far it's proofen to be very accurate and taken a couple of dogs already. I have'nt really had time to work up alot of data but the current load shoots well. Did'nt really need it but I got it for a song right after it was built and only had proof rounds thru it. It needed a home and my buddy needed the cash.

When I cut my Cheetah, I had some H-414 around the house. Turned out to be just the ticket w/Federal 215. YMMV.

I have a 22 Cheetah built on a single shot browning. Its an excellant shooter, but it seems that after 3900Fps accuracy suffers.
