for a moose hunt this year! A friend and I got a cow tag to hunt in district 17. He will be taking his 300 RUM and I will be using my .30-06 with 180 gr NPs. He is the permittee and I am the sub so most likely he will be taking the shot. The success rate in the area is very high and we have already found lodging and a couple of guys (one through work who lives in Maine) who are experienced and are going to put us in good areas. We are really excited. It is not often guys from my parts get this opportunity. Wish us luck fellas!

Good luck Riflefan. I drive through that zone alot, and most always see a moose near the road. Have a great time.

Thanks guys.

Mainer, how far off the roads should we hunt? The feedback we are getting is really not that far, but I don't know how far "not that far" is? We are hearing a lot of people literally hunt just off or even right on the roads. Is there a legal distance you have to be off the road to shoot?

Congrats Riflefan. Of all the animals that have crossed my table, moose was up there at the top for edibility (along with speed goat), and there should be plenty of it!

Rf- If a road is paved, you have to be 10' (I think) off the right of way..check the law book that Maine will send you. If it's unpaved, go for it. You can't shoot from a vehicle, or resting on any part of a vehicle, but you can shoot from an unpaved road. You can shoot an animal that's standing in an unpaved road. Do not have a loaded gun in the vehicle, that's against the law. Sunday hunting is forbidden, so if you're out scouting the day before, any guns in your vehicle should be encased and bolt removed if possible. Some folks just ride around all day on back roads until they see something. That's kind of boring, and expensive these days. Find a few secondary logging roads that are driveable but don't see much traffic and walk them. Best ones are in clear cuts that haven't grown up so much that a moose will disappear in the new growth. If you get one, then you can drive your truck in closer for retrieval. I'm sure that your local help will have a few all picked out for you when you arrive. A "Maine Atlas & Gazeteer" by DeLorme, about 20 bucks in Wal_mart, or many other stores in Maine, will be a big help to you. Good Luck

I had already ordered it online and got it in the mail two days ago! Thanks for the advice my friend.

You are going to love Maine directions!:) That is all I can say! You need to experience it! Just ask any old guy for some in a local store when you get there.

Too funny! You know what though, everyone we have talked to up there has just been as nice as they could be. It is almost like being home with a bunch of West Virginians, but those folks up north really talk funny! :)

You guys are great. Thanks for the well wishes.

Rf - JPatterson will verify this, as it applies for New Hampshire as well.......Once you get clear of the crap in southern New England, into NH and Maine, people start to seem normal again, even if we can't talk right! Our hearts are in the right place.
