I would like to put a horn buttplate on my rifle. Have any of you ever done this or know how? If so please share a little of your knowledge.
Thanks

Might check with www.brownells.com and see what their tech's have to say. They could probably sell you the butt plate, also.

I have to ask if you mean making one from antler or if you mean "horn" style. Makes a big difference because to go with a horn style, you're talking getting one the proper size that will fit the existing stock then inletting it, not something I'd suggest for novice.

If you're just making a plate from antler, no big deal but it'll require gentle handling to keep from breaking it. It'll have to be fit perfectly too, any gaps behind it and it'll be even more prone to breakage. Other than the mechanical concerns, you'd install it the same as any other buttplate.

I couldn't find any horn buttplates listed at Brownell's, but their site is kinda hard to navigate. Putting on any buttplate that doesn't conform to the existing surface on your gun can be a challenge.

Except for screwing on a replacement any plate that needs the stock dimensions changed requires plenty of care.

The Nieder skeleton style of buttplates that require inletting to the stock seem to be the hardest and require even tighter inletting that putting an action into a stock, especially to get a perfect fit. Curved buttplates are next in line with flat plates being the easiest.

I't been a while since I've really looked at horn buttplates, but I think most I've see were either flat or curved.

Installing a flat buttplate just requires that the back of the stock is perfectly flat and that the screw holes are in the right place. If you have to change the screw hold placement you can glue and drive tapered hardwood dowels into the old holes, then drill new holes. Be sure and drill your new holes exactly in the right place for a horn buttplate as this material is not forgiving of any out of alignment conditions and will easily crack.
