I'm Having Tumbling Problems On 405 Gr. Bullets That Are Tumbling, They Are Going 1800fps. Can I Slow Down And Get By With Them. 45-90 in a 1886 winchester with a 1-20 twist.

What gun? What cartridge? GC or plain based? What rifling twist? What is bore diameter? Need a little more info...

Let me guess. You're shooting .458" cast bullets out of a Marlin 1895.

The bullets are undersized for the bore and you are getting severe leading. The tumbling starts after about 10 shots.

To get around this Marlin quality problem, purchase .460" diameter cast or use gas-checked bullets.

A .458" bore is fine for jacketed bullets and cast bullets sized 0.01" to 0.02" over groove size work as well. It has nothing to do with Marlin quality. Please remove foot from mouth.

OK JACKMC is having a problem, lets help him and not get into a peeing match over "quality" problems.

Jack it's going to help us if you give us some more details on load, rifle and such.

Actually, Jack's shooting a .45-90, so you can throw the 1895
argument out the window. The 330's are stabilizing, but not the 405's.

Jack, I got your e-mail..check the reply

.45-90s traditionally had a somewhat slow rate of twist to shoot lighter bullets than the usual .45-70 loadings.

What twist rate does your barrel have?

Jack, we're talkin' about you behind your back :D

He said the twist was 20"

I have a .458 Win mag I built with a 1:22 Douglas barrel that will stabilize up 500gr bullets. My 550s have some problems. I built the rifle to test the limits of of paper patch bullets, thats why the 1:22 twist.

Have you tried other brands of bullets? If the bullets are cast, you may have a problem of not having the correct bullet diameter for your rifle's bore. Your 1 in 20 stwist should stabilize a 405 grain bullet unless the bullets you're using are unusually long. Slowing the velocity down may be worth trying but typically, slowing a bullet down in a situation where the rifling twist is inadequate just worsens things. In your situation, it sounds like your twist rate should be doing the job.

jackfish, i have a question (probably a little dumb) but i need to know how to remove the rear factory semi buckhorn sight from my 1895 cb? looking at it im drawing a blank. i have a williams fp sight i want to install but the rear sight seems to be in the way.

The sight drives out from the left to right (the loading port is on the right side) Use a brass drift, it doesn't take too much force. Remove the elevator ramp to prevent scratching the barrel.

thanks andy, i appreciate that. i'll work on that tomorrow. do you suggest re installing the elevator ramp and leaving all in place after removing the sight?

Your sight may be different than the standard 1895 that I am thinking of. On the regular rifles, the ramp will slide out of the sight if you lift the sight slightly. You may just have to protect the barrel with a piece of paper as you drive out the sight. When I installed a FP on my Guide Gun, I put all the rear sight pieces in the box for the FP, that way I know where all the pieces are.

Andyit actually appears that the sight blade and the rest of the ramp (not the elevator) are all one piece but im not certain as my eyes arent that great anymore. it looks more like the whole thing might lift out on the end towards the muzzle.

I am using confusing terminology, when I said "the ramp will slide out of the sight" I meant to say "the elevator"
