I bought a new 39AS. I hate this gun. The new safety hammer with return spring makes it like I'm shooting a springer air rifle! Is there any way to backdate the new model with old model parts to make it function like the old hammer/spring did? Anyone tried it?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Teutonics.

Probably not. My best advice would be to get an older model and sell your new one if you don't like it. Sorry to say they've changed the design of some of the innerds and older parts probably won't work.

Check out some of the auction sites I see them advertised often.

Bummer. Thanks for the reply though.

I have been occasionally looking on some of the auction sites, but haven't found the same model in perfect condition (which mine surprisingly was). It's also hard to buy a gun through the internet and be comfortable with the condition without holding/fondling/etc. I'll keep looking.....

Now that I've found the forum, I'll have to start digging around! :-)

Thanks again.

The rebounding hammer is easy to disable, but there is no real half-cock, so you'll need to use the crossbolt safety. Also, I'm sure any warranty would be voided.

That said, if you want to disable it:
1. Remove the tang screw
2. Pull off the stock
3. Slide the bracket that holds in the hammer spring and strut out sideways
4. Cut off the lower fork of the Y-shaped strut
5. Re-assemble using a weaker spring (I used a Wolff, $7, from Midway USA)
The reason for the weaker spring is with the rebound disabled, the firing pin hits the shell too hard, mangling it, causing ejection problems. Mine has worked perfect with the Wolff spring. The Marlin forum on Rimfire Central is where I learned this, mostly from "Gizzy".

Brownells has a schematic that will make it much easier to understand what you are looking at. Part # 44 is the strut. It is a hard piece of metal. I wasn't having much luck with a hacksaw, so I used a cold chisel. It popped right off. It doesn't have to be pretty, just gone. Also, some have reported that even with the weak spring, it still mangles hulls. If that is the case, carefully file some off the firing pin.
