I'm thinking about rebarreling a Rem 721 from 30-06 to 7x57. I'm completely unfamilliar with the procedure. I would like to be able to shoot cast boolits, is there anything I need to request specific for cast? What questions do I need to ask, What should I look for? What pitfalls should I be wary of? Assuming a $200 barrel, what is a reasonable ballpark figure?
Thanks in advance

Actually your 06 will in all probability shoot cast bullets OK. One rule of thumb is as you go down in caliber cast become more fussy to shoot.
Keep in mind that I'm not a big cast shooter except in handguns. I'd think that a cut rifle barrel may be a little more accurate than a button rifled barrel.
With a new barrel and the fitting and headspacing your probably looking at between 350 and 450 bucks.
Unless your existing barrel is shot out I'd try some cast in it. Marshall Stanton has some dandy cast here at Beartooth bullets. Just click the Beartooth bullet tab at the top of the page to check them out.

If the current barrel is in decent shape, it might handle cast bullets just fine. Regarding the cost to rebarrel your rifle, it depends on the barrel selected, the gunsmith and your ability to negotiate. Take care...

I don't think I made myself really clear on the original post. I really am wanting a 7 Mauser and thought rebarreling might be the cheapest / easiest way to get a good one. Cast bullets were a second consideration.
Not having ever had a barrel put on a rifle, I just didn't want my ignorance to cause expensive lessons, that might be avoided with some good advise.
Thanks

That's certainly possible. As I said for a gunsmith to rebarrel it would fall into the 350 to 450 dollar range. The caliber doesn't matter as far as the charges go unless bolt face and feed rail work has to be done.
Have you thought about checking with actual gunsmiths about the charges for doing this? Here's a couple you might look into.
