View Full Version : PROBLEMS with S&W 22A

I recently purchases a S&W 22A stainless. It was almost closing time where I bought the gun, but they give free range time when you buy a gun. So, we returned the next morning to shoot my new pistol. The gun was not ejecting properly, and finally jammed one so bad that we couldn't get it out. I took it back to the counter and they told me it was me, gave me a box of "good ammo" saying mine caused it (that they sold me) and sent me back out to the range, saying that it fired fine for them in rapid succession.

On the third round, it jammed again, and was worse than before - jamming every third round or so.

I took it BACK to the counter, and told them if they got that bullet out and said it was fine, then I wanted them to follow me to the range and watch and tell me WHAT i'm doing wrong.

He came back and said this gun i bought 13 hours earlier needed to be sent back to the manufacturer.

I've waited, and finally gotten my gun back. It failed to eject on the third round. The paper sent back with the gun said they diagnosed it for a problem the gun was NOT having.

I'm severely disappointed now, and have vowed to NEVER purchase another S&W product again! i purchased a brand new Browning Buckmark many years ago, and in the whole time i owned it, i remember only one misfire... and I truly believe it was the ammo that time.

I'm not sure what my rights are, they say that they cannot refund me or give me credit. I feel this gun is a lemon, myself. And while I'm no expert - I've been around them enough to know it shouldn't be doing this.

Has anyone else had a bad experience with this gun? And can anyone tell me what my rights are as far as a refund or credit?

You might talk to the folks that made the gun. Smith and Wesson has always been good about fixing their products. I'd almost bet if your gun is new there is a warrentee on it.

Give them a call or an email and see what they say.

yes, there's a warranty alright. They just charged me $60 to ship it back to S&W and get it in again. This gun is costing me, and I've barely gotten to shoot it! No way should I have to pay when their product is obviously completely a lemon.

I can't even sell the gun and recoup what I can with any clear conscience, knowing it's a piece of crap!

What are my rights? I want an exchange, since they obviously can't fix this one!

Your dealer can ship the gun a lot cheaper than you can. He should be happy to return it to S&W for you. If not, then get a new dealer. I had a problem with a gun recently and the dealer took care of the whole thing at no cost to me. BTW, I have a 22S that has worked flawlessly for me.

I have a 22A also that I had a few problems with but they went away with a little use. I really think it was the ammo but after shooting it for a while I tried that brand again and it shot fine with it. It now shoots perfectly.
I have had occasion to return a S & W pistol to S & W twice, they sent me a free return shipping label and it didn't cost me anything either time. I have no clue why they didn't send you a free return label via UPS. S & W warrany work has been great for me and I very seldom hear any complaints on any S & W forum regarding their warranty or customer service. I have actually heard of them replacing guns that created too many problems. I would suggest you contact them again, explain the problem, and ask for a free shipping label to return it for correct repairs. They will do it.

It sounds like you shipped it to the dealer and they repaired it and sent it back to you and it still doesn't work?

Did you talk to the folks whom you bought the gun from? Like Ironhead said if the dealer wouldn't help you out with a new gun I'd sure not spend anymore in his store.

You might consider getting a Ruger MK III, I"ve got an MKII with about 10,000 rounds thru it now.

The Smith & Wesson forum has a thread on S&W customer service that you should check out. Read the post by Denver Dick on the 2nd page in particular.

Your dealer is at fault for not getting S&W to properly repair your pistol. It seems that S&W customer service is a bit erratic, but your dealer is the type that wants you out the door as soon as they've got your money. I've dealt with those types myself and they don't get my repeat business.

If you can't get satisfaction from a S&W customer service rep, ask for a supervisor and keep going up the chain if necessary.

I'd post your problem on the S&W forum too. There's a higher concentration of users there and someone from S&W is likely keeping an eye on it.

lisacambi,

I can't speak for S&W customer service, cause I ain't never dealt with them. But I do own a 22a. Mine is not stainless, but doubt that much matters. As mentioned by another poster, I also had ejection problems with it for a while. Don't know the bran you are using, but you may try some CCI mini mags for a while and then go back to some "cheap" ammo. Mine didn't like cheap, bulk ammo until it had been pretty well rung out and broke in. I don't have any ejection issues with it now, but I couldn't use bulk ammo in it until several hundreds of rounds had been through it.

As far as the Buckmarks go...........You can keep every last one of them! I ain't never buying another Browning product. Bought a buckmark last year and had nothing but trouble out of it. Jammed every other round, wouldn't eject. Didn't matter if it was high velocity, hyper-velocity, or bulk ammo. Then the piece of **** site rail cracked. Talked to Browning. They sent me a replacement and said that it would be the only one they would replace. They told me they know it is a weak part, but they only make plastic rails and I have to buy the next one that cracked. After disassebling for cleaning and learning that all internal parts are plastic, I did myself a favor and removed it from inventory. (Wished I could have gotten my $$ back out of it, but thats a whole other horror story!)

Anyway, sorry for the rant. But IMHO, the S&W is a whole lot better deal than the Buckmark. The only thing I don't like on the 22a is the terribly huge front blade site! But it does go bang, so I can live with the site.

"Has anyone else had a bad experience with this gun? And can anyone tell me what my rights are as far as a refund or credit? "

We had a few at the range I work at part time. We are gradually replacing them with Rugers. They just are not real durable, and there is too much plastic in them for a range rental gun.

I would insist on a pre-paid shipping label for returning the gun, as many times as it takes. After it gets fixed, trade or sell it for something else. FWIW, I would avoid the walther p22, as well.

Good luck getting it fixed!

I think the 22a open sights are lousy.

I am just about ready to buy a new 22a but the open sights are a concern to me. I am wondering if anybody has changed the sights? I plan on getting several barrels in which i will add a scope to one. I still like to shoot open sights as well so I am thinking about swapping the sights out.

Find a dealer that isn't just in it to take your money.

As for my 22A, the first 200-300 rounds it jammed every other round if I used CCI ammo. I switched to federal bulk pack and things got better. Maybe two jams out of a 10 round mag. I then began cleaning after every 50 rounds, did this up to the 800 rounds or so point. No it shoots everything and any thing. I don't think I would trade it it for any other semi 22 on the market, other than maybe a Walther p22....
