What do you use for protection in your car or truck? I carry a Sprigfield xd in .45 caliber for protection. This pistol is proving to be very reliable and has alot of fire power with a 13 shot clip.

I usually carry a pistol or revolver stuck in the front seat crevis beside my leg. I also have a double edged dagger above the sunvisor. If you run your head up in my car window you are going to end up bleeding one way or another.

I keep an AMT .45 ACP Backup in my console between the seats. It only holds 5 rounds, but it is double-action only with no safety and one in the chamber. It is a no-fail quick response weapon with substantial firepower and a short flat profile. I keep two extra mags in the console just in case of an extended firefight, LOL.

Same reason I carry my Taurus Ultra-light. For most of it's life it stays in a front jeans pocket. There's two speed loaders in my other pocket. If I'm going for a ride and going to be sitting in the car there's a Phobes paddle holster in the glove box that will either fit in a cross draw or standard belt position.
The first rule of a gunfight is bring a gun. If you feel that it's a safer world to be armed than be armed. Last year we had some real riff-raff move into the area. The fellow that now lives one house down the block is a professional thief and a druggie.
When one if his kids shot a rifle thru my grand daughters bedroom window I tried to talk to him about it. I got assaulted for my trouble and thought I was going to get a screwdriver thru my ribs.
That was the day I got my CCW. The local county sheriff whom is an hour or better away did nothing. Come to find out this guy is one of their snitches and gets the look-a-way when he does his own crimes. He makes his living selling drugs and stealing wood to sell for 300 bucks a cord to old folks that have no choice but to buy or else. Talk about strong arm tactics.
I haven't had anything to do with him since, but I'm not foolish enough to be without some kind of protection anymore either.
This guy is so drugged up half the time he has no idea what he's doing and certainly no compunction about doing anything. He's already assaulted the fella that lives across the street from him.
There used to not be near that kind of problem here, but in this day and age it's happening more and more. Our county is shutting down meth labs by the dozens and I know there not touching most of them.
I worked in the State prison system for a number of years and know how effective our law enforcement is and it's not. Their overworked and underpaid and mostly are in the position of the little boy sticking his finger in the dike trying to stop the flood.
If your not prepared to keep yourself out of trouble your liable to be a victim. It's sad to see our country come to this day and age, but here it is. Keep your powder dry pixelperfect .

Is legal in Louisiana, car is an extention of your home.
But i've found some odd things.
#1. With a standard transmission, have a choice of driving or Shooting, not both.
#2. Fired inside a car, even with the opposite window down, it's about as loud as loud gets.
#3. Will have to be "one hand freindly"...you'll not have both hands free unless you are out of driving position...semi-autos had better be in chamber loaded condtion.
#4. Penetration through metal would be a plus for ammo...you'll occaisonally find it wise to keep the gun below window level, and being able to shoot through the door would be a plus.
#5. Long pistols do tend to get hung up or smack into things when trying to cross your line of fire from one side to the other...and Murphy's law will prevail.
I keep a Super Blackhawk in my truck. Mainly cause it's the rattiest gun I own.

When I drive, I have what I'm carrying at the time- either a 1911, HiPower, or HK P7.
As a "dedicated car gun", I have an AR15 in the back, but somewhat accesible. I've used an M1 Carbine for that also, and it works better in a way because it fits in a softball bat case (which might help against theft- can't hurt).
I'm a believer in keeping a long gun in the vehicle. It might make the difference whether I can get home, or get to pick up a family member sometime.
Call that paranoid if you like, but as Clint Smith says: "I have a gun. Why would I feel paranoid?"

No dedicated vehical gun here. I carry one on my person is all. I would use the vehical to " to get away from the threat" if I could?
Sometimes have a rifle or shotgun in there if I'm on the hunt. They would not be "relevent" to your thread pixelperfect.
I have never tried driving on the public roads and shooting before? I have done so from the lawn tractor(stop to take aim).
I figure it can be done though! I see folks eating loose meat sandwiches, talking on cellphones, having sex, etc. ALL AT THE SAME TIME while driving. A person just needs to take the time to learn the skills.
I "prefer" to not leave guns in my un-attended vehical.

I alternate between a Bushmaster and an Ak47 in a locked and mounted gun vault in the back of my vehicle. Generally have around 600 rounds of clipped ammo with it as well as a bug out or survival bag loaded with essential needs.
I also have a handgun of some sort at my side.
Some of my friends here in Indiana also carry a similar load.
Not because I need to, because I can.

I usually cary a Kahr PM-9 on me all the time except at work then it resides in my truck. I have no dedicated "car/truck" gun but I have been thinking about getting one. Just leave the gun in the car. However I live in the city and I am rairly outside of it. Are you guys concerned with somebody stealing a firearm from your car/truck? This is my primary concern. What do you do to prevent you dedicated vehicle gun from beaing stolen?

Think most of you live in a lot safer areas to drive through that I do...certainly a long gun locked in the trunk might be handy, but no where near as handy as a handgun you can grab right now. Are several studies out, and the debate is on the real population of this area, but if N.O. isn't #1 in murder it's in the top 3.
Have had several shootings (three killings) from carjackings in the take-out lines at fast food resteraunts (in one, a passenger got the gun from the carjacker and shot him)....hada carjacking/murder today.
Are right...driving off (fast) is the best course of action. But whn one car stops short in front, and another pulls onto your rear bumper, you just might have a problem.
Theft is always a concern of coarse.
I don’t drive this vehicle to the mall and leave it sitting out in the parking lot for long periods.
You can’t see anything in my vehicle due to very dark windows and my vehicle in garaged at night.
It is a risk but I don’t consider it any more risky than weapons on my person or in my home.
It is a risk you must be aware of and take as many precautions as possible.
If I lived in the hood I might change my tactics somewhat but probably not by much.
I have been carrying in my car for 20 years with out incident.
In Indiana you don’t have the obligation to retreat. (Castle doctrine)
Deadly force is authorized in the case of a car jacking.
Your handgun is the tool you use to get to your rifle when possible.

Shooting from a car is the only place a MAC type or UZI pistol would be useful. You have a lot of shots and dont have to reload. Its easier than a rifle to handle in a confined space. I dont have a dedicated car carry gun but an AK with a folding stock would be my choice.

wow guys.
here in oz you are probably aware of our plight with gun laws etc.
it is considered a privelage and not a right here to own a gun and certainly nothing could be carried on you if it was thought to be a weapon of some sort. no baseball bats in cars unless a glove etc is carried is an example i have heard of.
imagine my surprise when you talk about carrying AKs and 1911s on you in the vehicle. we cant even own those! you can still own hanguns here (probably for not much longer) but can only use them at approved ranges etc. this just takes my breath away when you guys talking about packing heat to go get some milk. just another world away. complete surprise!
3 car-jacking murders in a county? i havent even heard of one in oz. scary times.
interesting to see what our american cousins are up to. im jealous in many, many ways that you can still do what you do but it is so hard for me to even imagine it because i prob wasnt even alive in those days here in oz which would have been 2-3 decades ago.
keep on keeping on guys.

Because we can and shall continue to do so by decree of the founders of this nation maintain our freedoms by whatever means necessary.
Ones ability to protect themselves lies in their willingness to do so.
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve to encourage rather than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
-Thomas Jefferson

-- The Federalist #46.
Thomas Paine: "...arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property... Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them."

Quote
Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right – a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world.

Okay....you Aussies live in a predominantly homogenous society with the exception of the peaceful Aborigines, and the industrious Asians on the north coast. But let us send you some of the "people" that are making trouble for us and let's see how long it takes for the land down under to become as unruly as our cities have become. The underclass sections of the UK are beginning to see what we're dealing with, and Brits can't own those types of firearms either. France is undergoing riots virtually every week by "unemployed youths" and the lawabiding citizens are helpless. God bless the 2nd Amendment.
In the tank bag of my motorcycle I carry a Taurus 605 loaded with moderately warm .357 JHP's.
I usually ride alone to very remote places. The small framed Taurus fits nicely in the bag and I can fire it without removing my gloves.

Think inexpensive, somewhat compact, easy to get into service and effective. That and I know it like the back of my hand. That way I can deal with any problem if necessary.
At that point, get outta dodge, reload and call for the cavalry.

5150 and mike,
wow i couldnt agree more with the founding fathers. i would just like to stress how foreign the concept of being 'able' to carry a gun with you at all times to us folks down here is. keep fighting the fight and keep the 2nd ammendment alive. if it was an easy task, i would most certainly fight for something similar here and will continue to fight so that our laws do not restrict onwnership any further. right now im off to go and pick up a remington pump in .223 (seeing im not allowed a semi-auto  ). id love an AR15.
