Several months ago our department changed from the 4586 S&W 45 ACP DA only to the Glock 22 40 cal. I really like the Glock. It and a new belt rig weighs about what my old belt rig alone did. And the glock is accurate enough. The deputies that wanted to buy their 4586s were able to. I bought mine and brought it home and put it up. I pulled it back out today and put 50 rounds throuh it. When I was carrying it I wasn't too crazy about it because it felt like carrying two bricks. But i really enjoyed burning a box of ammo through it today. I carried that gun for nine years and killed 12 deer, 3 cows and a hog with it that were all involved in auto accidents. Never had to cap a human critter though. It felt like shaking hands with an old friend shooting it today. I'm thinking about carring it in my truck some.

Related story;
years ago, I owned a S&W 645, one of the first models they produced actually, serial 0000234 or sumthin like that.
To repay part of my student loan, I sold it, and since the '80's, have pined for "my gun" back.
My dealer is a cop, whose Department carried S&W 4506's, a gun just as fine as the 645, and a tad bit longer that your 4586. They too, along with the 4 surrounding towns to him, went to the G22, so that all 4 towns could save cost on purchase and training, and have interoperability,
He snatched up all of that's Departments guns, and the long and short of it was that I ended up with his gun, 8 mags, mag pouch, extra nite sights, springs, and a set of adjustable sights for the screamin' price of $250 + tax!!!!:D
As far as I am concerned, it is as accurate as any gold cup I have owned, allbeit heavy. You can literally pick up ANY 45acp empties, not even from your gun, load them into a mag, and they will cycle thru manually. These were and still are great relaible guns, as is yours, and will last you a good long time. Most Police trade ins only suffer from holster wear, and lack of the type of maintenance that you would perform personally.
here is mine, wearing the adjustable sights!
Target is from 25 yards outdoors, with 200 grainers

That model is one of the few S&W's I liked, Hampton PD here in VA used to carry the 1086, and when it was told no more 10's it was offered the 4586 in its place,, They took them and never looked back,, great pistol and round.
I always felt the weight was a comfort, and the pistol itself was and is an excellent base for the conversion to 45mag
Would make an excellent "truck gun" IMO
