I need a higher front sight on my .38. I'm guessing it is regulated for a six-o-clock hold on a big bullseye.

I can't see how it is attached, I assume sweated to the rib. I hate to get it altered but it sure would be nice to get it hitting closer.

I just loaded some 150 grain semi wad cutters with 3 grains of bullseye and they hit the same place as factory 148 grain target loads.

Suggestions?

All of the K-38s I've used had pinned in front sights. They are definately hard to see. It's possible you could have a target rear sight blade which is quite a bit higher than the nornal one. Replacing it would of course bring down your POI. For replacement parts I would try S&W, Gun Parts Corp, or possibley even Ebay. Any number of the better pistol smiths would also have spare parts....
Good luck & God bless / Rick

Thank you, Sir!

It took a 7X magnifying glass to find it but the sight is pinned, as you said. I checked Midway and found they have a rear sight blade .025 lower than the current one which should move my POI down just the 3" I need.

Now I have to find the tool to remove the sight.

Ken,

When you order the sight get the full kit that has the screw, nut, plunger & spring. Also ask them for the screwdriver bit for the nut and the staking punch.

To remove the blade, screw the adjustment all the way right and keep turning until the screw head breaks off. Then push the blade to the left and unscrew the screw shank by turning the nut. Then just push the blade and the screw head out the right side. This is the way it is done!

Brownells should have an instruction sheet, ask them for it.

I priced the kits and the tools and I'm tempted to just buy the whole new sight assembly.

I priced the kits and the tools and I'm tempted to just buy the whole new sight assembly.

But if you buy the tools now you will have them the next time! If your gun uses the old style (square front end) there is a good chance the assembly isn't available anyway. There are also different screw positions to complicate things even more.

you need a taller rear sight...or take file to the front sight...are you sure your rear sight won't raise enough to counter for it. My PPC guns will all hold the neck at 25 yards, and also point of aim....that is 2' different in the sight setting at 25 yards....2 full turns on the screw.

Years ago I had a K-22 with a six inch barrel. I cut a dovetail in the front ramp so I could install a dovetailed rifle sight with a bead on it. Put a u notch rear blade on and it made a dandy set of sights for shooting rabbits and small game. You could put any hight front dovetail sight available on it. Brownell's has the dovetail cutters and files along with sights.

I could do that Bob, but I figure this here K-38 will be such a rare and valuable item someday that I can retire on it. :D

I ought to put some kind of optical sight on it so I could actually hit something but I just can't bring myself to it.

Ken I'm in the same boat. Spent years shooting NRA large and small bore pistol competition. Sadly the eyes are going and now I really need optics to shoot a handgun well. I used an aimpoint on the 44 mag and the Ruger target auto, but for pack in the woods guns I use the open sights and make do the best I can. I'm still death on popcans out to about 25 feet if they will stand still long enough.
