Alright this is it, i have to choose between the .270 Win and the .308 Win before next week! I will only be hunting hogs from 100lbs to 270lbs and ranges could vary from 100 to 250 yards. Which caliber do you think i should get? And could you also give me some advice on which bullet weights to use?

Any advice would be great!

Either caliber will work just fine. Using a good bullet and with a good shot placement you will end up with a lot of bacon.

Tough choice but me...I've hunted with a 270 for 20+ years and it's been a quick killer, only once I've had a deer take more than one step and that was a shot error of mine. My pick is the 270 Win with a tough 130 or 150 grn bullet.

I personally would take the 270 and use either Barnes TSX or Nosler Partition. Without looking, I don't think there is a substantial performance advantage between the two

Decisions, decisions. Why not buy both. You never have to many firearms.

The .270 will give you higher velocity and slightly higher energy retention at 300yds. It will also shoot a bit flatter. Probably not enough prcatical difference to dwell on, if shots are well placed.

The .308 gives you the option of a 180grn bullet and a short action.

I'd take the .308.

For crying out loud, just pick one and go with it. There's no practical difference in killing power, recoil or big game uses between either one. Pick one in a rifle that shoots well and feels good when you shoulder it or better yet split the difference and get a 280 Remington.

I would be more concerned about the scope power for your uses than between the two calibers you mentioned. You might look for a scope with a wide field of view for those close up shots with enough power for shots out to 300 yards. I like a 2 by 7, but lots of folks that have to hunt close up like the 1.5 to 5's. Ideal is a scope with around a 70 foot field of view at the bottom end. Anything with from four to seven power will work great for those 300 yard shots. Just think about field of view when your shopping, usually all the scope specs will be listed.

As for bullets any heavy for the caliber bullet will work well. 165's in the 308, 150's in the 270 seem to be proffered here on this side of the pond for hogs.

My hat's off to Bob, ya hit it right on the head.
The hog nor the hunter for that matter in practical purposes will ever know the difference. Pick the gun that fits you and go hunting. I have a 308, 270, but hunt 99% with my '06, Never saw a animal seem to care what I shot em with. They all seem to fall down and die about the same.

I see this a lot and it's akin to " I like blonde's or I like brunettes" it's silly. Hope that is not to un PC.

On a nicer note I of those two I would probably pick the 308 for a couple of reasons nothing to do with hogs really. One it is a short action caliber and a 30 caliber has more bullet weights to choose from, especially if a guy handloads. Either will work equally fine for what your asking

I agree with bob, split the difference and go for the 280!

Hi .308Hunter, I own both calibers but would go with the 270 win. using partition or Accu bond.
But like everyone else unless you are going to be shoot distance either caliber will do the job for you.

the 280 is a good choice but the ammo is to expensive.
