Well I went to American Shooting Center this weekend and kicked off a few rounds from the STW at 200 yards. I'm proud this week to say that I'm ready to advance to 300 yards.

I shot 6 rounds on the bench the first was a fowler. The 5 rounds at 200 yards were less than 1" spread. I then took 3 factory loads and shot them off the bench but only using sand bags on the front Those three shots were about 2.5" apart.

Sounds like you need to stick to your reloads.

Got a friend with an 7mm STW. It's ported and feels much like shooting my 280 Remington. He whacked an elk last year at just over 600 yards. I shoot the same case as the STW but with a 220 grain 32 caliber spitzer boat tail. It whacks elk also.

Well with the hand loads I was stable used front and rear bags. With the factory loads I had a front rest only thought 2.5" was really well. I haven't entertained the thought of anything past 300-400 yards as I don't want or haven;t trained for Windage and Elevation adjustments.

In all reality nobody I know has the same interest that I do when it comes to shooting.

I have always been intrigued by this caliber, and if I could find one in a lefty bolt, would most likely snatch it up!

The .284 to me is the best claiber ever. When I leanred of the 7mm STW I had to have it. Now I want one of the smaller 7mm like th 7mm-08. There was a guy on this site "I think" that had for sale a Remington 7mm STW. He assured me that the gun shot well but the scope was bad. I purchased the rifle for $575.00 he wanted $500.00 I gave him gas money to deliver. I returned the scope for repair. Now I have one fine 7mmSTW. I will get it rebarreled if I ever wash/burn this one.

I love the 7mm best round out in my opinion.

Good shooting! The shooter who can do that with any consistency is very rare.

You say it's rare IDshooter. What is a consistent pattern for most shooters? I know I had a post a week or so ago about getting 3" groups on sand bags. I was told to put quality time in at the range. This time I did, I adjusted my focus for 200 yards and put time behind the gun and pulled the group I did. Very exciting, next time I'm going to 300 yards.

I have a 280 Remington Mountain rifle that is fast becoming my favorite deer rifle. It won't shoot as flat as the STW, but it's light recoil and light weight are wonderful and it's still a 400 yard plus deer gun which at my age is probably well past my limit to begin with.

I still take the 8mm Rem mag elk hunting, but that little mountain rifle is a dandy to carry and shoot.

I've never shot one of the 7mm-08's, but I do have one of Remington's model 7 carbines with the 18.5 inch tube in 308 that I'm setting up for one of the grand daughters to hunt deer this fall with. She's 13 and were loading it down a bit for her.

bobo, depending on where your "zero" is a 100 yards your 300 yard group should be a tad lower than your 100 yard group with the 7mm STW, what with point of aim being the same and all.

At this time I wouldn't worry about "where" so much as "how" at 300 yards. If you are one of those that "must adjust" for each yardage you'll find it easier to just "hold over" for the medium distances rather than fiddle with elevation all the time. I do a considerable amount of long range shooting, not at paper but at sagerats and pdogs during the summer months. I'd have my scopes wore out from fiddleing pretty quick. If you shoot at paper at 100, 200. 300, 400 yards you will be surprised how little point of imact moves with something as flat as the 7mm STW. My 300 RUM should be as flat as it and with it sighted 3" high at 100 yards it's still an inch (or there 'bouts) high at 300. As time permits I'll be shooting the 300RUM at paper at 400 yards +, but from what I saw of it shooting pdogs a couple of weeks ago, I've got out to 300 yards pretty well "dialed in" :D

I run a 300 yard zero so my 400 is about an 8" drop.

I'm am with error in group size around 3 at 100 and 3.5 at 200. Only time will tell what I'm grouping at when I get to 300.

Just curious Bob...what bullets are you usng in yours, Sierras? I bought some 140 Grn Pro Hunters but haven't loaded any yet.

I've been shooting the Sierra 220 grain Gameking in my 8mm Rem mag since I bought it in 1978, but tried the accu-bond Hornedy 139 grainers in the 280. I haven't killed anything with it, but a hunting buddy used it last year and popped a nice four point whitetail at about 350 yards with it. That bullet at just over 3000 fps from the muzzle did a dandy job and I'll use it this fall. I don't elk hunt with this gun, but I'd probably go with one of the Barnes triple shocks if I was contemplating do that.

I have the same rifle you do, I'll probably get it out of layaway later this month. How'd the Hornadys shoot for you? I also have the 140 grn Sierra Pro Hunters to try and also picked up the 154 Hornady Interbonds and 160 grn Accubonds to try. I've been considering ordering some North Fork bullets also and the 139 Hornady's to try out.

The Hornady's shoot five into less than an inch at a hundred, but I've great luck with Sierra's also. Never tried North Fork bullets.

In my years shooting at public ranges, I've probably met 10 people who could consistently shoot under two inches at 200 yards with hunting rigs. I've seen quite a few people shoot a really good group now and then, but most of their groups are bigger than two inches, by a long shot.

I've seen many a hunter during the sighting-in days at the range who was happy to get all their shots on a 12"X12" target at 200 yards. I saw two fellows sighting in 30-30s who couldn't consistently hit the target at 100 yards. They figured they were ready when more shots hit the paper than missed.

I expect that a lot of folks who post here are above-average shooters, or at least aspire to be. Lots of hunters who hit the range the week before season will never shoot under MOA at longer ranges, much less do it consistently. Heck, many rifles, even today, aren't capable of shooting under MOA without serious effort. The one-inch group you shot at 200 yards is about 1/2 MOA. That's what I'm referring to when I say you are doing well.

In respect to this a couple weeks ago my groups at 200 yards were about 3.5-4" I posted on it here somewhere. I really took my time to get the 1" group using a site vise etc... I then used sand bags front only and got 2.5 inches. I thought and seen most people out shoot me at the range. Had a guy on saturday printing a 1.5" group at 300 yards with a .300 RUM and the time before that there was a guy chunking lead from a .338 at 200 yards and his bullets were touching each other. I thought something was wrong with me or my gun when at first I couldn;t get the gun to shoot under 3.5" at 200.
