Does anyone own this rifle or have any personal experience with one? What do you think of it?

I`m thinking real seriously about buying one.........or maybe two. They look like the rifle bargain of the year to me, kind of a dyed in the wool Remington guy.

I have a stainless model in .30-06. I am happy with it and think for the money it is a good rifle. Don't expect tack-driving accuracy though. I would also take it straight to a smith and have the trigger adjusted. I had mine taken down to 3.5 lbs and it is super nice. I love the action and the trigger. Groups range from 1" to 2" to even a little over 2". I can find a load in each bullet range that will shoot around 1.5" so I it is ok for a hunting rifle. It will shoot one 150 grain load at just under an inch so mine likes the lighter bullet weights. The stock is not much although the R3 recoil pad (made by Limbsavers for Remington I think) is real nice. I must say it is pleasant to shoot. I am going to have a Boyd's laminate put on after this hunting season because you just can't get a good bedding job with those things. The smith I go to hates the stocks and I don't like it much either. It also shoots better with the pressure point on the fore end instead of floated. I am going to float the barrel again, and have it pillar and glass bedded when I put on the new stock.

Rifle fan brought up a good point about the stocks. Most folks that work in the gunsmith trade don't care for the injection molded plastic stocks. Good layed up glass stocks are good and not inexpensive, but most if not all of the injection molded stocks can't be glass bedded very well. The plastic just don't stick to the bedding material. They are also very flexible and you can squeeze the forend and make it touch the barrel about anywhere.
I'd suggest spending a little extra and get wood or laminate over that $69 buck wonder their putting on rifles now. It's not just Remington, and I'm a Remington fan, it's all the gunmakers sticking those plastic stocks on guns.

308,
The only SPS I've had experience with was a friend's 243 Win. If I were to get another varmint rifle, this would be it.

It's economical, and this one was deadly accurate. He's made quite a few 400-500 yard shots on rockchucks with the rifle, and I've shot it on these, and ground squirrels, and it has a great feel to it.
I'm not a Mod 700 fan, but getting closer every day!

Have a new one in 30-06 with the new remington trigger. Right out of the box (after standatd barrel break in) it shoots 1 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yds with factory Rem 165 grain. Recoil seems light as well.

I bought my son a 700 SPS Youth in .308 win for Christmas. It's a good buy. I adjusted the trigger, mounted a Leupie VX-I and went to the bench. It shot MOA with the reduced loads that Remmy sells. Sub-MOA with Fed Match ammo. Have not put handloads through it yet. Looks good so far.

Agreed. A couple weeks ago I floated the barrel on my buddy's new SPS in 7mm Mag. I had to take a LOT of material out of the forend to really get it to float free, even when there is some pressure on the forend. Even so, a good twist on the forend will still cause it to touch the barrel. That forend is about as stiff as a rubber spatula.
